how can i help her sleep?

i have tried everything! white noise, bouncy seat, swing, swaddle, cuddling, paci, feeding (many many times), clean diaper. she wont sleep. i know she is tired, she keeps yawning. i think she slept 4 hrs total since 9 last night till 9 this morning. shes not crying or colicky just fussy and very awake.

...as i post this she seems to be giving into her exhaustion, but i still need tips on how to not have another night like last night.

  • I think these nights just happen...it comes along with the territory of having a newborn. = )

Georgia had a night like that and it hasn't happened again.  THREE hours of sleep between 8 pm and 8 am.  Then she went right back to sleeping for 3-4 hour stretches!  Just get some rest yourself today.

I couldnt' really do anything for her on her crazy night....just holding her and falling asleep with her cuddled up to me, still wide awake.

  • I agree with Pook - I think it just happens.

Emma has had a couple nights like that in the past week, 2 in a row now in fact :( I think its mostly a combination of a growth spurt and just the unpredictability of being a newborn.  Its the same thing, shes not outright wailing like its colic, just fussy and awake.

Just try to catch some zzzzs during the day today.  Its rough!  I know!

  • One trick that works for us is to gently rub in between her eyebrows and down to her nose - it puts her to sleep when she is clearly tired but fighting it. It doesn't work everytime, but when it does it's like magic. There are other times when she just won't sleep.

  • We have had a night or two like that with Alynn too, it just happens and you have to power through it. Rest up today when you can. Also, be sure she isn't over stimulated at night and she isn't getting her long stretch of sleep during the day.

And i hate to break it to you, but the sleepless nights don't end with newborns. We have had more then one stretch of time with Drew when he wouldn't sleep for hours on end.  (I am talking at up at 10pm and won't sleep until 7am for almost a month.) It's a part of parenthood.

  • 3 week growth spurt? Or she's overtired. Cut all stimulation (lights, sounds, movement) and try shhh'ing and patting her at the same time. Baby's can't concentrate on 3 things at once so the crying or fussing should slow and hopefully she will be off to dreamland.

  • Oh and DO NOT try to keep her awake during the day. You posted about that a few days ago and I'm wondering if keeping her awake has backfired on you. Babies need a nap 1 in every 3 hours at least. Keep that in mind. GL.

No you told me not to so I didn't, and then the next night boom awake for the better part of 12 hrs. I let her sleep all she wanted to, didn't interfere with her natural cycle at all. As for catching up on sleep today, we have a doc appt in an hour, an RX to get filled, and DH got paid today, so it's pay the bills/grocery shop day. After I posted she sort of drifted off then when I put her in her swing she was wide awake. I said eff it and wrapped her in her blanket, turned the swing on and the white noise app, shut the door and went to bed. I feel bad but I need some energy for today. I slept till 11:30. It was heaven.
