Question about Short term disability (STD) after a long talk with DH

I talked with DH yesterday and it seems he is just worried about the market but understands that he can't guarentee things will be better in a year so we've agreed to wait to late summer/early fall. We can afford another baby regardless, it's a matter of our lifestyle and I want him to be comfortable moving forward. If you have experience w/STD or HR, can you help me out with the following:

I have 3 weeks of paid vacation that I can use for maternity leave in addition to my STD. I know STD will pay even if the baby comes during the summer (I work in a school system) but I am curious about how it works if I deliver during the school year. I know it kicks in after one week on leave, does that mean it will overlap with my sick/vacation time or do they run consecutively? We are trying to plan our next IVF cycle and this definitely plays a role.
ETA: to clarify STD standing for short term disability :)

  • I don't have an answer to your question but when I read your post, I read "Question about sexually transmitted disease after a long talk with DH".  I thought to myself, well there's a post you don't see everyday on SAIF.  Baby boards, yes, not SAIF.

  • i also thought sexually transmitted disease... i don't know what STD stands for other than that.  i'm sorry that's not helpful, maybe you should write out what it stands for in the title of your post so that people will have a better idea in opening/responding.

  • This is how mine worked-

STD didn't kick in until I was out for 60 days so I am a bit jealous:) but it ran consecutively.  So each day it was 75% STD, 25% sick/vacation until my leave time ran out and then each check was just 75% STD.

  • Every employer is different with STD....I have seen a million different variations. Mine kicked in on the day I delivered, and then my paid vacation extended the paid portion of my leave. Of course, I ended up resigning, but I got 6 weeks paid 100% STD and then 2 weeks paid vacation from my bank.

  • When DS was born the STD was just bonus money as I had enough sick days to cover me for the 9wks.    Since STD is paid through an insurance provider not the corporation they are not related.  You should be paid by the corporation for the days you have saved as well as by the provider for the insurance policy.  I was off for the last nine week grading period and spring break. I was paid by STD for -6wks (week of bedrest prior to delivery so 7wks disabled)  as well as for 45days of saved sick days.
  • My STD kicked in after 5 days unpaid (waiting period, I could have used vacation time for this but saved it for after).  Then I got 5 weeks paid at 60%.  Then I was able to use vacation time/unpaid time until I was ready to return.

  • My short term disability is 60% for 6 weeks, but I have to go a week before it qualifies. So I took one week of vacation, then 5 weeks of STD, and then I took 3 more weeks of vacation to get my 9 weeks of leave. During STD I have to pay for our health insurance out of pocket, so that kind of sucks.

  • If you have a private policy check your fine print. We tried to buy STD for mr before I got pg and were told if I had any treatment for IF within 10 years, they wouldn't pay any pg related STD.

It is a contract through my district but with an outside agency but I suppose I should call on this otherwise I'm cancelling. I was told if I get PG on or after July 1 I am covered but I didn't ask about IF.  I am going to call today.
