VBAC

Dr is okay with VBAC!

I spoke with my OB/GYN at my last appointment about a VBAC, and she said that if that's what I wanted, she is fully supportive of that.  However, the hospital I'll be delivering at has a few rules:  No induction and no pitocin.  The most she can do would be to break my water.  Also, if I hit 40 weeks with no sign of labor, she said she would recommend a RCS.  Here's hoping for a natural delivery prior to 40 weeks!

  • That's great!! I meet with my OB/GYN on Thursday and I'm hoping for the same news! She said after the birth of DS I'd be a candidate for one so I'm hoping she still is on board!

Congrats, however it doesn't really seem as though your doc is very supportive. With #2 my doc gave me the restriction of only going to 40 weeks and it resulted in a RCS.  I'm not saying this will happen to you and I really hope not but it might be worth searching around and getting a few opinions from other docs.  Check and see if you have a local ICAN chapter, they are great with info on docs in your area.

This time around I have found a doc that will let me go to 41 weeks (possibly longer if everything is going well) and this is for a VBA2C.  The no induction rule sticks but the extra time is key for me since I've never went into labor with either child.  Good luck and I really hope it all works out!

  • I received the same information....and I'm looking for a new doctor and hospital.  The fact that she doesn't want you to go beyond 40 weeks, leads me to the conclusion that she's NOT actually supportive of a VBAC.  My doctor gave me the same rules and actually told me if I really wanted a VBAC, I should explore other options.

Why did you have the original c-section? If you were 'late' the first time or had FTP, you might want to get a second opinion.

Ditto.  I switched at 24w for this very reason and didn't need the stress of having to deliver be EDD with so many restrictions.  It's very frustrating, hey?

  • I agree that any doctor that gives you the 40 week time limit is not truly VBAC supportive.  How often does a baby actually come early?  And the latest research is suggesting that closer to 41 weeks is more accurately full term.

My CNM pointed out to me that I am likely a late gestator.  No matter how many pregnancies I have, she believes I'd most likely always be going past 40 weeks.  I delivered my VBAC baby at 41 weeks 1 day.  There's no reason why she would have had to come the week before.

  • She recommends a RCS at 40 weeks, but it's not a must.  I also got the impression that this was the preferred method of the hospital.  I've been thinking about this, and I'm going to go for 41 weeks- then I'm pretty sure that I'll be ready for any method of delivery.  Big Smile
