Zantac for reflux

Sophia has a reflux problem- it isn't horrible but she does spit up after meals and you can sometimes hear the contents of her stomach rise and she is clearly uncomfortable. This is the reason we use rice in her bottles but she still has the problem so we've decided to start her on Zantac under our doctors advice. Anyone else using Zantac for their little one as prescribed by your doc? Has it helped?

Also- posted more newborn pics on my blog- link in siggy.

Re: Zantac for reflux

  • DD#1 had horrible reflux, and I suspect that Avery has a more mild form. Addy took Zantac from a very young age, it didn't stop the spit up, but it made her a lot more comfortable.
The only bad thing about it is as they grow and gain weight it becomes less effective and you have to go in and get the proper dosage for their weight. It's a constant adjustment from what I remember. But well worth the time because she was a completely different baby after starting that!

We went to the doctor today and LO has reflux. He was choking on milk, wheezing (apparently it was going into his lungs) had violent hiccups, and he was spitting up a lot of his meal. We were given Zantac and he's on 0.5cc of Zantac 2x's a day. We will have to adjust and keep an eye on it as he gets older which probably means frequent trips to the doctor as he gets bigger.  I was really sad that we had to put him on Zantac but in all honesty seeing him spitting up and hearing how uncomfortable those hiccups were broke my heart and brought me to tears on most days.

I found a website today that was talking about taking babies to the chiro and getting adjustments and that helped reflux and also giving them some kinda oil (Fish Oil?) to help the reflux if you wanted to look into other alternatives rather than giving your LO Zantac. We've had two feedings so far and he has kept everything down and the hiccups he did get were short lived and didn't sound as horrible.

Oh... If this helps, the doctor recommended I still BF (We were giving a bottle so I knew how much he ate vs how much was thrown up etc) and whenever he eats I keep him upright for 30 minutes after he eats. During that time I wait 5 minutes before I burp him and he sleeps at an incline (which he did before). I saw a night and day difference doing this yesterday. We haven't had to do the rice 'trick' yet because this has worked so well for us.

  • my lil guy has bad reflux and is on axid which i see a diffrence on. First we tryed Enfamil AR which has a thickener in it and it kept it down great but then got really bad constipated. So we switched to similac sensitive and Axid. My ped has two babies with reflux and his children take Axid as well since it has less known long term side effects. I also, like one of the girls were saying, keep him upright when eating and 30 min after as well. I recently got the nap nanny for him to sleep in and it has made such a diffrence in his refluxing at night. I hope some of this helps and good luck with your LO.
