Playing With Baby

Hi Everyone,

I feel like a weirdo for asking this, but I really don't know what I'm doing. Jericho (LO) is up more frequently and for longer periods of time during the day. The doctor told me to talk to him and be happy, sing songs and play with him during the day when he is awake to stimulate him.  MH does a much better job at playing with him, i'm just the "cow" with the milk I guess but when it comes to play time I really don't know what to do with him. I talk to him in his carrier or when i'm holding him and he's awake but is that really considered "Playing"? What do you guys do with your LO's? Is there anything I can do for tummy time other than getting him up on his arms, legs and trying to get him to roll over?

TIA

...

Re: Playing With Baby

  • I walk around the house with LO and show him different things, look out windows and talk to him. We sit at the computer and listen to music and I sing to him. He doesn't like to do tummy time for very long, but he will lay on his back and look up at the toy bar over his mat so I rattle the toys for him. I hold him on my lap and let him push up with his legs to stand and practice holding his head up and look around. Anything that stimulates him is "playing" in my opinion.

  • I agree with PP. Walk around with him so he has the chance to notice things. I get on youtube and look up nursery rhyme songs and play those for her (and sing along, of course!) and she'll notice the bright colors in the videos. I lay her on her mat both on her tummy and her back. It also play music and has lights so that entertains her. I make silly faces, do "this little piggy" with her toes, read her books...you name it.

  • I have the same problem, it's hard to really 'play' with him. It may sound silly but I read him books and count to him in english and spanish everyday.

  • I put Mason on a blanket and let him look at his toys, like the pillow pet a friend gave him and the FP Seahorse (which he LOVES!) I also sing to him (Love the Rock Lullabies), walk around with him, let him look outside.

  • I am struggling with this too.  I made some flash cards with black and white patterns (wavy lines, circles, etc) and hold them up for him, moving them within his field of vision for tracking.  I got this exercise from a book about infant stimulation.

We read books for a little while.
I put him in his swing for a little while in the mornings.
Tummy time & time on his play mat.
...and sometimes I just sit him on my lap and talk to him.
