Maternity Insurance Coverage

Alright! Just found  out I am recently preggers and my insurance company doesnt cover maternity, pregancy costs! Does anyone know anything about this or any company that does?

Re: Maternity Insurance Coverage

  • I don't know anything about special maternity insurance and it's a bummer that your regular health insurance doesn't cover maternity (is that even legal?).  But I do know that there a lot of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (We Care, etc.) that provide free medical care to expecting mothers.  I would recommend looking into that.  Even if you only go for the first half of the pregnancy, it would save you sooooo much money.  :)  I used to work at one of the centers up in Tallahassee and they are typically very clean and up to date with their equipment and the staff are wonderful.  HTH.

  • Thanks... I spoke to a billing specialist at the office I am going to go to. I am pretty sure I am just going to pay out of pocket until I can figure out the insurance issue. She mentioned that alot of insurance companies are considering pregnacy as a risk factor and are not covering it. It a shame alot of people dont realize their insurance doesnt cover maternity costs. This is very disturbing!

  • FYI - once you are pg, most insurances won't allow you to add the maternity coverage.  From my understanding, most policies require you to have the policy at least a mo before you are pg.

I was thinking this too, since most insurance companies don't cover pre-existing conditions...

this...unless you are on a group plan and pre-existing conditions do not apply.  My insurance BCBS says I have to be on for 30 days before I get pregnant.  I chose BCBS and looked at other companies because it was the only one I could add the maternity rider.  before that I have AvMed (group plan through former employer)

  • Yes, it's legal. I am self employed with an independent insurance plan and my insurance company requires a whopping FIFTEEN MONTH WAIT that you have to be on before you can even start trying to get pregnant. Needless to say, we paid out of pocket, and we will again with #2.
