How accurate are blood tests?

My son just had blood tests done on Friday. Just got the results. I am scared to death. Are blood tests accurate? We have a follow up appt with an allergist but it's not until July 22 (ARGH).

Here's the list:

egg white
peanut
sesame seed
corn
soybean
wheat
dog
cat
cottonwood
elm
white ash

I know this is probably silly but I can't stop crying. On top of this, my dad is in the hospital and had to be shocked back AGAIN this morning (9 times on friday). We just sold our house and although *they say* it's a buyers market, we can't seem to find anything so we have the stress of temporarily relocating a family of 5 plus two dogs. I just have too much on my plate. I am an emotional wreck.

    The RAST blood test is actually known for false positives.  Good news is negatives are highly reliable.

    The only way to know for sure - unless your LO has actually reacted to all the foods in his list - is to have your allergist do a food challenge.  We are having DS#3 challenged for egg in the fall (waiting six months for our appointment with the leading specialist in our area).  He tested positive but as far as I know he's never had it.  At some point I will have him challenged for the tree nuts too as that popped up on his two year RAST but wasn't there at the 7 month or one year RASTs.

    New allergies can develop at any age however so I just want to know for sure if we are avoiding things we really have to.

    In your case, avoidance is the best course of action right now. The initial diagnosis is difficult but you will find your way.  Hang in there.

    it will get better and easier -with everything. 

    I heard that there can be a false negative with the blood test. what were the levels.

    btw - what's white ash and elm?  This list is a lot to handle.  Can you re-test him for a bit of peace of mind?

    I'm really sorry about everything else. when it rains it pours.  I hope your dad get's better and you find your dream house.  It will get better ..
