So I've seen it mentioned here that Amazon diapers are a great deal because they don't charge sales tax. That's technically not true.
In most states, a vendor is required to charge sales tax where it has a physical storefront (antiquated laws). Given that Amazon (and other internet sellers) do not operate any physical store fronts, they can get away with not charging sales tax. Several states, including NY, has since changed the law. This is why Amazon charges sales sales tax for items shipped to NY. Even for states that do not require Amazon to charge sales tax, the buyer (YOU) has a legal obligation to declare these purchases on their tax returns and paying the appropriate sales tax. Whether you do it or not is up to you.
