Success after IF

blood blister when teething?

Lily seems to be cutting her top canines and I noticed yesterday that there was a pretty big blood blister on her gums.  It was dark purple and so gross.  Poor baby.

Today it seems to be gone.

Is that a "normal" teething thing?  Both girls seem to bleed a bit when their teeth pop through, but this is the first time I have noticed a blood blister.

:(

I would call the pedi.  I know I am probably an alarmist when it comes to these things but, blood blisters/ sores in the mouth are both a major sign of low platelets.

  • Just googled, since you know, Dr. Google is so accurate.  I am guessing this is what it is, though.

ERUPTION CYST OR HEMATOMA: Occasionally when a tooth is erupting, it breaks through a blood vessel before it break through the skin. This will look like a blue mass about the size of a pea or peanut on the gum. This alone is nothing to worry about. When the tooth erupts through the skin, there will be a little blood come out with it. Again, this is nothing to worry about.

  • Jack had all sorts of bruised looking gums and weirdness while he was teething.  Teething sucks.  Hope your (extremely adorable) girls get through the rest of their teeth with minimal issues (or better yet, zero issues!)
    Wheee!

  • My DD had this same thing a month or so ago.  I called the pedi to be safe and the nurse told me I better come in incase it was a foreign object.  I had already put my mind at ease that it was just a tooth coming in but a foreign object wasn't too hard to imagine since she was in the put everything in my mouth stage. So I took her in.  The dr. basically gave me attitude and told me how it was all a "normal part of teething." I was thankful it wasn't anything more serious but didn't appreciate the attitude. ;)

DS had these and the pedi said they were no big whoop.  Happened when he cut either his top molars or top canines, I can't remember.  ETA: yup, eruption hematoma is exactly what the pedi called them.  They are WAY gross looking - dark red/blue and just... mean!  But they went away on their own.

Nathaniel has this and my dh (he's a dentist) said its just a hematoma and it was fine.  But gosh that thing looks like it just hurts him when I looked in his mouth the other day:(
