Smash cake frosting

What type of frosting did you use on your baby's smash cake.  DS birthday is next week so I am trying to finalize everything.  I want to use buttercream for the cupcakes but worried that may be too much for him.  So do I use the normal store kind or someone suggested just dying cool whip.  What did you do?

She didnt' care much for the cake but we had whipped cream put on it.  It was very lightly sweeted.

You can make your own chocolate whipped cream for a chocolate frosting look, otherwise dying cool whip isn't a bad idea. Try it out before hand to make sure it works though

DD"s big cake and her smash cake were fondant with a thin layer of buttercream underneath. She dug right in, we just peeled off the fondant and she licked the buttercream off. I would just do a thin layer of buttercream.

The bakery we used did white cool whip frosting.  It worked out well.  We also used white because a friend of ours used blue and everything was stained blue!

I made a whipped cream fristing and used purple food coloring. It didn't stain anything! She didn't eat much of it though!

I just used buttercream frosting I made his cake myself from scratch

I used a cream cheese frosting and the cake had fondant over it.  As another posted had said, we also had to pull the fondant off a bit to allow LO at the frosting.
