Yardsales?

Does anyone have them anymore?  Or are they a thing of the past?

DH has been griping at me about how full our attic is (kids' clothes, our clothes, furniture, electronics, etc.), and suggested that we have a yardsale.  I remember my mom doing them when we were young, and they seemed like a *ton* of work!  At the same time, it would be so nice to have people come to us vs. us taking multiple trips to Goodwill or dealing with shipping on ebay or etc.

Do people even have yardsales anymore, or have they given way to ebay/ craig's list/ consignment sales/ etc.?  I'm also wondering if I could make a lot more $ on the kids' stuff at a consignment store or sale vs. a yardsale.

If you've had (or been to) a successful yardsale - any tips, tricks, or advice?

I'm sure this is a regional thing, but I thought I'd start my research here :)

Re: Yardsales?

  • I see signs posted for Yard Sales down here all the time.  I've never been to a yard sale cause I'm too lazy to head out to one at the crack of dawn.

  • I sell kids stuff at consignment sales and usually make very good money.  Clothing seels for 3 bucks or so, and I would never hope to get that much money at a garage sale nor would I sell the volume I normally do. Plus, it is just so much easier.

I won't seel on craigslist because it is a pain, and I don't like dealing with strangers if I can avoid it, with the exception of huge items like a sofa that we can make good money on.

Non kid stuff I just give to Goodwill.  Our thrift stores take stuff at the store, so when I find something I don't want, I put it in the car, and drop it off next time I drive by.  So quick and easy.

So if I were you, I'd sell furniture on CL, take all kids stuff to a consignment sale, and the rest take to Goodwill.

  • They are pretty big here, we are having one in 2 weeks. Whatever doesnt sell is going directly to goodwill. It's been my experience that consigment doesnt pay very much- you would be better off selling stuff on craigslist.

  • We haven't had one - yet. But my town hosts a town-wide garage sale 2x a year.

I used to refer to it as "the day where neighbors trade crap with each other" but now I have kids, I LOVE it!  I pick up a ton of toys for the kids for a song!

  • I heart yardsales (going though, not having!)  I only go when its a big neighborhood wide event though.  I'm not likely to head out to hit up one garage sale.  I had one a couple of years ago...it WAS a lot of work :(  and I didn't unload much stuff (although, FWIW, i think kids stuff does better than adult stuff...)
  • I went to several garage / yard sales last week to pick up toys / clothes for DS.  At least here, they are still popular.

I see them in my 'hood all the time (I think you know this already, but we're on the Green Hills/Forest Hills border).
  • Well, we call them garage sales here, not yard sales, but yep, people have them all the time. We get at least one email a week on our town's listserv about them and my best friend had one a few weeks ago and did well. Good luck!
