Parenting Books or Website Resource

My 3 1/2 year old son is constantly whining or "arguing" with us with every subject. I swear he's trying to assert himself and thinks that he can outsmart his parents. Everything is a negotiation and discussion. As in EVERYTHING!

Is this normal behaviour for kids this age? I want my kid to be assertive but respectful. Do you read any book or website for parenting toddlers?
