Food Allergy

Experiences with Consumer Affairs

Hey ladies, I thought it might be a good idea to list different food companies and your experiences with allergen questions.

My most recent:

Sara Lee (Hillshire Farms, Jimmy Dean, etc)
-always list allergens in the ingredient statement and usually have a bolded section.
-Couldn't confirm that my product in question was made in a plant that had NO tree nuts. They said that if there was any chance of contamination that they would list it, but couldn't confirm or deny that nuts were processed in that facility.
-Also couldn't confirm whether or not something was in spices/flavorings (question about mustard). There was no way for them to find out.
-Just to be thorough I asked about gluten. They would list any ingredients that might be sources from gluten, but couldn't guarantee whether or not they were.

Interesting. They were super nice with all my questions (other companies have definitely not been so patient with my inquiries, lol) but I'm not thrilled about the cross contamination policy. I've never had any issues with them, but I will be mindful of their bakery products if I have an unexplained reaction.
