VBAC

Success!

Hey ladies... I had a VBAC success! Paige Elisabeth was born last night at 10:38. She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz and is 21" long. She is beautiful!

My first c/s was due to CPD after 21 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing, but he didn't descend during pushing at all. When both of us started showing signs of distress, we went for the c/s. DS1 weighed 8lbs 12oz.

For those want the nitty gritty details...here they are:

My water broke at home at 11am. We stayed home for a while and took a walk to get contractions going, with little success. We headed to the hopsital around 2. When they checked me, I was still 3cm as I had been for about 10 days. With mild and irregular contractions, I was feeling a little bummed. My first nurse was not helpful and said "well, your doctor isn't on call today, we'll have to see if the on-call doc will let you labor or if he'll just take you for a section". I told her my doctor should be called because he told me he would come in no matter when I went into labor. She doubted he would come in on a Saturday. She was super annoying. Luckily, I got a new nurse shortly, who was much more supportive of my VBAC, and of course my doctor came right away and stayed at the hospital all day on a Saturday so I could have my VBAC.

After some nipple stimulation and some squatting, my contractions picked up around 4pm and were regular (3-4min apart) and starting to get painful. My doctor said he preferred I get an epi in case of an emergency and it didn't take much convincing for me :) Got the epi at 5pm. At 6pm they checked me, I was 5 cm and still -2 station. I was feeling pretty disappointed at that point, since my first labor stalled at 5cm and I had to be put on pitocin. He mentioned the possibility of a "whiff" of pitocin if I stopped progressing, but I wasn't really comfortable with the added risk. In the meantime, my fabulous nurse kept saying how awesome my contraction pattern was and how the baby was tolerating the contractions very well. When they came back to check me at 8:15pm, we were all SHOCKED that I was complete and 0 station. We labored down until 9 hoping my contractions would push her a little lower, and started pushing after that. I pushed with all my might...and at 10:38pm Paige was born! The nurse told us afterwards that she was so happy that we were able to have her vaginally because not only was she OP, but she presented with her head tilted to the left. Thankfully she never let on her doubts, but was instead completely supportive. She also couldn't believe that my contractions were so regular with such a poorly positioned baby. We had lots of people praying for us :)

We finally got our perfect family moment when they put her directly onto my chest, it was absolutely amazing. I was in complete awe of what my body was able to accomplish. I got a second degree tear and have lots of swelling down there but definitely not as bad as a c/s...and will certainly recover much faster. We nursed shortly after and she latched immediately. When she latched, our nurse said "well, its officially the perfect delivery". I couldn't help but think how absolutely opposite it was from our first L&D experience.

Anyway, just wanted to share that despite my skepticism all along, we were able to do it. Hope you ladies get to experience the same!

  • Congratulations!  Thank you so much for sharing your story, it is so encouraging!  My c/s was due to failure to descend and my OB suspects but did not diagnose CPD so I am so excited to read your story and know that I can have it happen too!

Enjoy your new little bundle.  I hope you have a super fast recovery and feel back to yourself sooner than you think possible.
