which brand/model of pump is the best? i know that i see and hear a lot more about medela but it could just be because they do a heck of a lot more advertising.
I am looking at Avent. I have seen good ratings on Ameda too. I agree with you on Medela. I have heard that closed systems are best, and Medela is an open system, which is why I chose Avent, because it's closed. I am not sure if Ameda is or not though., but people have a lot of good things to say about it!
With DD I had the lansinoh double electric (not the new one) it was basically an ameda pureply yours clone but I didn't like it. The double pumping feature seemed a lot weaker so I pumped one breast at a time which seemed okay but defeated the purpose of a double pump. All the reviews were amazing. I think maybe I just got a pump with a bad motor but I shelled out the money for a medela freestyle this time..
I have the Ameda Purely Yours, and loved it when I was using it. I actually rented the hospital grade Ameda for about 2 months before purchasing one of my own. It was nice because the hospital I delivered at used Ameda pumps, so they gave me a freee collection system (normally retails for about $60) and this is the same brand that they use in our lactation room at work, so all I had to do was bring the collection system with me to work, and not the pump. You should ask your hospital which brand they use and get that brand because they will give you extra of everything.
Medela Freestyle. I talked to several LC's and doulas who agreed that they were bar none the best because of how they express milk (2 way suction). When LO was born, he was a NICU baby and the Medela pump at the hospital really felt similar to what LO felt like. The Freestyle does as well. Yea, they advertise a lot, but they are that good and I will never use another brand.
I am really happy with my Ameda. It is a closed system and quick and easy to keep the parts clean. The suction feels really strong, so I only turn it up half way to express milk.
