Lots of spit-up...when to be concerned?

My son spits up A LOT after his bottles (more in the past couple of days).  I talked to the pediatrician about it at the last appointment and she said that as long as he isn't crying/upset when he spits up, then he is fine.  I hate seeing so much come out of him after each bottle...I don't know how he could be gaining weight when it all comes up.  AND...I'm sick of changing his clothes and my clothes all day.  It just makes me so sad.

***We started him on regular Similiac and changed to Advanced for gas.  Do you think we should give the spit-up version a try?

Re: Lots of spit-up...when to be concerned?

  • We are dealing with this too. We use the Similac Sensitive which seems to help a little. We tried the spit up one and didn't see much of a difference. My pedi isn't concerned since he's gaining weight and doesn't seem to be too uncomfortable. I do have to be sure to have a big bib on him at all times and couple burp cloths to cover me after feedings (or any time I'm holding him really) so I don't get covered in puke. Sometimes that stuff is like glue and is super hard to wipe off! I keep hearing it gets better at 6 months do let's hope that's true :)

  • Just this morning my LO spit up A LOT all over me. I had to change my shirt and give LO a bath! I BF but I did supplement yesterday for 2 feedings because she is cluster feeding and I can't keep up. I hope it is just because of those bottles. She doesn't usually spit up, and never spits up that much. Yuck!

  • Did it start after you switched formulas?  My pediatrician cautioned us about switching formula, even the brand/type of water used to mix the formula that is can cause stomach upset/gas/diarrhea.

Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Thanks ladies!  We switched formula 2 weeks ago and things were going really well.  Just the past 2 days have been REALLY bad with the spit-up.  I feel like I am trying everything.  I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow but I know that she is going to say that since he isn't crying or upset while spitting up and since he is gaining weight, he is fine.  I just hate it!
  • I have been dealing with this with my son as well. He was spitting up all the time and hardly keeping anything down. Eventually they put him in the hospital to rule out pyloric stenosis and they found on a upper GI that he has really bad acid reflux. We tried Enfamil AR which has a ingriedent in it that thickens the formula when it is in babys tummy and it helped with the spitting but then he became very constipated. We recently switched to similac sensitive and a script for axid to help reduce acid. So far so good and im keeping my fingers crossed. You may want to talk with ur ped about the possibility of acid reflux. And tell your doc that even tho he is gaining weight you are concerned and you want something done....end of story. Big hugs to you, I know how hard it is! good luck to you and ur LO.
