Re: beyond constipated

  • I find that generic Miralax works wonderfully for painful bowel movements. It doesn't give me cramps; it's not really a laxative....it's just draws water into your stools so keep drinking enough water, too. If I am really bad and have terribly painful anal fissures, then I do often take 2 doses instead of one. All of my doctors have said it is perfectly fine (and I'm still pregnant, too!).

  • How much colace are you taking? I was up to 300 mg a day (or 3 pills). I never bled. I would probably call about the bleeding although I'm not sure what they can do for it.

Are you using Lanolin on your nips? When I was in the hospital they told me about saltwater soaks and that helped. Right after feeding, fill 2 glasses up with as hot of water as you can stand. Put in about 1-2 tbsp of salt. Put them on your boobs until the water cools off then pat dry.

  • A beyond painful BM with bleeding is probably an anal fissure. I've had one pre-pregnancy (just another awesome eating disorder side effect that no one talks about!) and I have one now, ugh. They have been described as "passing glass", and if this is what you have, you know what I'm talking about! TMI I usually have to grip something because it is so painful and I have actually though of getting something to bite down on!

The treatment for an anal fissure is usually a high fiber diet, lots of water, colace and laxatives as needed, and 2-3 sits baths a day. I am still taking colace but I don't know how long you can take it, though I read it does not cause any dependencies. I am struggling with a high fiber diet because I EBF and feel like high fiber foods are giving LO gas. It can take 4-6 weeks to heal but you should feel better within 2-5 days if you follow all directions. I am tempted to call my OB, but unfortunately, I know there isn't really anything they can do about it.

Just wanted to commiserate that yes, others are unbelievably miserable, too.

  • I can't speak to the constipation, but if your nips are as bad as they sound you might want to talk to an LC and make sure LO is latching well and if they are the LC might be able to prescribe a prescription nipple cream.  I am using "Jack Newman's Nipple Cream" and it works so much better than lanolin.
