Help bf encouragment please!

Hi! I went in for induction thurs. Only got to 4 cm. I was having back to back contraction S small but non stop and babies hr went down super low. They stopped potocin and tried again later but got the same result so i had an ems csection. Im so sore, and disapointed i had to get the csection. Ive become very fustrated with bf. Desmond is latching great but he has 'tounge issues' and basically gums my nipples hard! He keeps his tounge out at first but then pulls it back and flatens my nipple out! Im trying the nipple shield now but he gets so fed up with it. I feel like hes so hungry all the time. Help! Im about to give this baby a bottle! Sorry-- im on my phone

Have you met with a lactation consultant?

Hang in there. I've had a lot of issues with BF (mastitis, blocked ducts, a blister) and it's been extremely frustrating and painful. I know breast milk is best for our baby so I just keep going and try to stay positive.

The nurses at the hospital actually told me initially that I probably wouldn't be able to BF our baby unless we got her frenulum clipped. We didn't get her frenulum clipped and I've been successfully EBF since birth.

Good luck! I know how frustrating it is.

  • BFing takes work, it may be a natural thing to do but it still has to be taught, and practiced by both Mom and Baby. You can do this! It's frustrating, and can be extremely painful - my cracked nipple is just starting to feel better! But it will get better.

Have you been in touch with your local LLL or a LC?

If you feel like you have to pump and bottle feed, then pump and bottle feed. LO will still be getting "the good stuff", and you can always continue to work on Bfing while you do so.

It's not easy for everyone. But you are doing great, and will do the best you can for your LO, that's what matters!

    My overly happy baby girl!

  • DD2 could never latch, so I have been pumping and bottle feeding for a month.  At least she is getting my milk, even if it adds a step to each feeding time

If you are talking about formula feeding, its not the end of the world, but if you are making milk why pay for it.

You can do this, but it isn't easy.  Don't give up with out talking to your LC!

We were also told the same thing about our LO's frenulum. With a little practice and a nipple shield, he's gotten much better with latching. Keep at it, I hope that it gets easier for you!

  • I had the exact same thing happen with my induction. It really did take a week before I felt like I was even semi-successful at breastfeeding. Every day was another day filled with traumatic breastfeeding sessions; lots of baby crying, lots of me crying. You just have to be determined to get through one feeding session at a time, and it really does get better because your baby learns. If you can, call a Lactation Consultant. Having the help of a LC really does make a big difference in the beginning.

  • All newborns are hungry all the time. A bottle won't change that. If they're awake, they're eating. That's what they do.

Hang in there. Ask for help. Get the number for your local (or as close to local as there is, it doesn't matter if they're in another city) La Leche League leader. Call them up, day or night, when you want to quit.

As for the frenulum comments, it might not be necessary all the time, but I know one mom who had it done for her baby and went home with a new - happy and easy to feed - baby. She said it saved her breastfeeding. So don't rule it out! It's a really minor procedure.

  • i have read that babes do flatten out your nipples when they nurse (by the way they press them against the roof of their mouth with tongues).  mine have always looked totally flattened when either ds or dd unlatches.  bf hurts like hell at first too.  i had successfully bf ds for two years and had a good idea what i was doing- still had nipples that were actually scabbing over on the end because they were so raw from nursing.  it hurt a ton for about a week-two weeks until they healed (lots of lansinoh).  i think that's just the deal generally- new babes want to nurse constantly (for comfort and nutrition) and your body is learning how to do a new thing.  it doesn't happen blissfully right away and i think most of the time it's a pain in the bum for at least a week after your milk comes in.  i would be happy your lo has a good latch otherwise and hang in there a little- and call a lc if you need more advice and help.

  • My LO had issues BF in the beginning, so I pumped and then tried every day to get him to latch. Then he just got it one day. He used to do all the same things yours did before though.
