Cloth Diapering

going coverless

I've seen that so many of you let your LOs go without a cover with a fitted. I love that idea in theory for breathability and cuteness but is it realistic to think my 2 month old will be able to do this? I can't help but think that since she is basically always laying down, that there would be compression leaks galore.

Her pediatrician recommended going without a dipaer all together to help with this rash we've been fighting. He said to just wrap her up in a towel and plan on doing laundry. Wouldn't wearing a fitted with no cover be similar? I have one GM and the rest of my dipes are pockets, AIOs, and flips. Should I consider stocking up on fitteds and, dare I say it.... wool? I just don't have a ton of $ to spend  Huh?

Re: going coverless

  • We leave DS coverless all the time on the weekends.  We have fitteds which makes it easy, but we also use prefolds a lot (snappied of course), which work great and are super cheap.  DH calls them DS's bam-bam diapers.  There are no compression leaks because we don't put any clothes on him...maybe a t-shirt at most.  Obviously doesn't work for going out, but works just fine around the house.

I'd start by trying a dozen or so prefolds with a snappi and then moving onto a wool cover and even fitteds if it seems to be working and you'd like it to be a more long term solution.

  • It would be like wrapping her up in a towel only less messy :P We go coverless all the time at home and even sometimes when we're out and its really super hot here. You can always add a hemp insert to add more absorbency. Also I wouldn't put any clothing over the diaper, just put her in a tshirt and babylegs if you're worried about her getting cold.

  • I didn't go coverless until recently because my DD is always on the move. If you want to give her bum some cover free time you can lay her on a prefold or towel while she's in a fitted coverless - so if pee seeps through it will be absorbed by the PF or towel.

Wool is also breathable - so that's another option. When DD is starting to get red or even signs of a rash we ditch the PUL diapers (pockets/aios etc) and strictly use PFs/fitteds with wool or coverless. She clears up much faster that way :)

Also you can get upcycled wool on etsy for not too much $. I might be selling an a soaker soon that DD never got to wear and has outgrown. But do a quick search on etsy and see what you can find.

  • Thanks everyone! I don't know why I didn't think about buying some more prefolds. I loved the ones we had when she was first born but she grew out of her NB stash so fast (including her covers) so I never bought more. Maybe I'll do that for now and then slowly stock up on fitteds because they're just so stinkin' cute!
