DS is on EleCare for milk/soy protein allergies. We started solids, and he has done fabulously with veggies- squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and peas.
But every fruit I've given him gives him hives all over his face and he starts gagging after about an ounce of food, and he cries for hours. I've tried bananas, apples, peaches, pears and mangos (not in that order). He can tolerate prunes but he still gets fussy afterward.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? His reaction to milk was much more severe and dramatic (sunburn-red skin, colic, body rash, facial swelling, bloody diapers), so I guess I don't know when to start thinking he might have allergies to fruits since his reaction is comparatively mild.
Thoughts?
TIA! (And so thankful this board exists!!)
Re: Fruit allergies?
Personally I would stay away from mangoes period. They are in the same family as poison ivy. I live in Hawaii and its NOT uncommon to meet someone with a mango allergy. I personally have a mango allergy and I get blistering hives on my body.
With your fruits do you make them yourself or are they from a jar? Sometimes there could be an additive in the jar food thats so minute that the food company doesn't have to list it as an ingredient.

Allergic to Peas...so far
my allergist recently told me that most people that are allergic to fruit is an oral allergy only. I didn't want to argue with her since i know a person that carries an epi pen for a melon allergy.
Have you tried baking the fruit first? I think a lot of people are allergic to raw foods. Either way, i would probably avoid melons and blueberries.
Thanks ladies!
I have been using Earth's Best purees because I can buy them in single jars at Target and BRU and he usually only has each fruit once, so I figured I'd start out with jarred purees. I didn't realize there might be additives!!
Curious - why melons and blueberries? Blueberries are very low on the allergen scale, and were the only fruit my kids could tolerate for a long time!
