how do you clean your pump hoses?

somehow i managed to pump for a couple minutes with a stuck flange, which resulted in the milk backing up into the hose on one side. now my hose is full of milk.

i foolishly washed my hoses once and they quickly grew mold, so i had to replace them. but maybe there is a better way to wash them? (i soaked them in warm soapy water, then rinsed and set them to dry)

TIA!

Re: how do you clean your pump hoses?

  • I know you can put them in the Medela microwave steam sanitizing bags (directions are on the bag).  What I would do to avoid mold is after washing them, put them on the pump and turn your pump on without the tubes connected to the flanges.  This will pump air in and out of the tubes to get the moisture out.  Maybe air dry them a little first so the water droplets aren't too close to the motor connection.

This is exactly what Medela told me to do!

  • after each pump, while I'm cleaning up/getting dressed, etc, I let the pump keep pumping and the sucking thru not-connected-tubes dries it out. If you wash it, hang the tubes to dry (I use a rubber band on a cabinet knob to keep the hoses hanging).

  • When I washed them I would whirl them around a bit to get the drops out then connect to the pump to help suck out addition mositure. Then hang to dry.
