Parenting after 35

FFFC

Jason is turning 4 on Monday and I am only having a birthday party for him with close family next weekend. We already went to a few extravagant birthday parties his classmates' parents threw for their kids, but I am not doing anything like that this year. The only thing I am doing is bringing corn muffins and stuff for decorating them to school Monday, so kids can decorate their own cupcakes (corn muffins b/c they only let bring "healthy" food to school.) I will bake the muffins myself though. Am I a terrible mother?

  • Good for you for not going all out. I applaud you and not giving into society. What you are doing sounds fun to me.

You're not remotely terrible. I think it's awesome that you're baking cupcakes(corn cakes) and that big birthday parties are overrated!

  • We had a big party for his first birthday, but I won't be doing anything like that again for a while.   I'd told the neighbors to just come over for cake and don't bring a gift, but none of them listened and brought gifts anyway.

We were invited to a 7 year old boy's party a few weeks ago.  Boy, that was eye-opening.   They had a reptile demonstration and pizza and about 20 kids.  It was pure mayhem.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with not having a big party.  We've never had a big one for Ben.  We've only had parties where we have invited family.  For his 4th birthday, we had a baseball theme with a table cloth, balloons, plates, cups, and a baseball shaped pinata.  We just cooked hamburgers and ate on our back porch.  Ben had a blast.  Big birthday parties are overrated and in my opinion are just for the parents to show off.

  • That is not at all flammable, and you are not at all terrible.  Your plan sounds like a lot of fun - the corn muffin idea is great!

I am not one for the big blowout parties.  We didn't invite more than family even for her first birthday.  I agree with pp that the huge events are more for the parents to show off than anything else.

No.  I play to alternate the kids so each has a small bday party while the other has a big one and next year they flip.  That's how I discovered I liked small ones.  Not everyone likes over-the-top shin-digs.  In fact, this year, it's a combo party for the kids.

First of all, not flame worthy at all, Good for you.    Umm, they only let you bring "healthy food" to school, so you're going to frosting, sprinkles, etc. on corn muffins?  I like the fact of corn muffins (yummy), but the school is OK with letting the kids decorate them, why not go all out and send cupcakes?  I guess, I am such a rebel rousing that I would just send dark chocolate, and say, "It's healthy!".  Which is why I don't bring treats for my birthday to work.

  • Do what feels right for you. Last year we had A's party at a local pool and it was 104 degrees! This year I'm having it at home with the A/C and inviting just a small group of friends :)
