What do you serve at play dates?

So we have a playdate with DD's friend from school. Both are 3.5 and I think her parents are coming. I told them that I will serve a light lunch since its 11:30 am and asked what she liked to eat/drink and if she had allergies etc.

Anyway-- I'm curious-- what do you serve? I was thinking some fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, and maybe grilled cheese sandwiches with juice/milk?

Thanks!

  • That sounds about right.

I've done chicken nuggets, yogurt, PB&J, etc. some kind of rice crackers or pirates booty and juice/water w/ Teddy Grahams for desert or something.

  • This post made me sad!  Keira is allergic to milk, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs.  I wish she could have a PBJ or grilled cheese!  I don't know what I would offer if we had a play date!

My daughter is allergic to peanuts and originally to milk so I know how you feel! I actually trained her immune system (with ped's blessing!) to tolerate the milk product by giving her small exposures to yogurt, cheese and ice cream and so far so good. She'll still itch when give whole milk, but she's starting to tolerate skim milk. She drinks soy though and will occasionally break out for no reason to something she's eaten and we have no idea what it is!

Peanut allergies are quite dangerous, so we haven't dared to try to exposure her to anything containing peanuts!

I say you offer the same thing you feed your child anyway.  It's better for the visitor to think your food tastes 'weird' than for your child to think they're weird for not eating how other people eat.  If the visitor was the one with allergies, would you serve your own child something different?

My neice can't have gluten or dairy.  When she comes to visit-including Thanksgiving- we try to make sure only 'C friendly' foods are on the table.  It also cuts the risk of her having something dangerous.

We haven't tried peanuts either, but it came back on her blood and skin testing that we had done.  I have actually gotten her to eat bread with milk in it and she scratches but doesn't break out in hives.  Her milk allergy is pretty extreme, even cheese breaks her out in hives.  I was so happy when she started tolerating bread, it seems like milk is in everything!  Thankfully her air passages don't close up but she swells up so bad her eyes swell shut, it was scary the first time and we ended up at the ER!

  • We usually do it in the AM or PM, not over lunch (if we do it over lunch, we usually meet at McDs so they can play).  I usually make a banana bread for all of us to share.
