Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Teething with a HIGH fever?

DD only had 4 teeth until she was 1 year old. At 13 months she cut three more teeth. With each new tooth she developed fever for a day or so.

Two days ago she had a slight fever. Yesterday it was 101 and today got as high as 102.6. Other than the fever, DD has been acting completely normal. She is eating fine, drinking like usual and playing like she normally does (At least after I give her some ibuprofen)

She finally let me look in her mouth today (she hates anyone messing with her mouth) and I noticed that 3 molars are coming in. The two on the bottom have broken the skin and one on the top should be out tomorrow.

My question is this... has anyone had a child develop such a HIGH fever while teething? And is it normal for the fever to last for several days? I am wondering if it is lasting longer because it is 3 teeth at one.

DH and I are set to leave her with my mom for the first time ever overnight on Saturday and I am wondering if I should cancel our plans or if this is in any way normal.

Thanks!

  • I would go get her ears checked. High fevers aren't usually from teething, especially for over 24 hours. Teething can however cause congestion, and if that doesn't drain properly/quickly it can lead to ear infections. Not that I'm a doctor... but DD just got a double ear infection AGAIN with two new teeth.

  • I suggest getting ears checked too.  A coworker of mine just took her son because he had a high fever for 3 days.  He was a little older and was able to tell her that his ears did not hurt.  However, when the doctor checked he still had a double ear infection!

  • Yes, our son runs an even higher fever for a day or two when a tooth is just cutting through the gum.  With the last tooth, his fever got to 103 (rectal).  He was also very crabby and chewing on things, though, so we knew it was teething.  He has five teeth now, so we've gone through this about three times.
  • DS has ran a fever of over 102 for teeth. However, it was only for like half a day.
  • About two months ago DS had a similar situation.  He acted fine, but had a low grade fever that turned into a 102-103+ fever.  We were leaving to go on a trip that day, so I took him to the doctor.  The doctor chalked it up to a virus and his exact words to me re: teething were "If you thought this might be teething, it's not.  Kids don't get fevers this high with teething."  Sure enough, the virus ran it's course with some extra snottiness and a cough.  My niece, who DS is around all the time, also got sick.

THIS... LO has a 102.7 fever now and is cutting canines but have been told repeatedly from out pedi that higher than 101 is NOT from teething but usually from a virus. Teething can cause there immune systems to be weakened leading to viruses and other illnesses to creap in.
