I am a vegetarian. Many doctors look down on that during pregnancy. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good books to read. I don't need meat to get all of the things that my baby needs. I am already well aware of that. Just looking for some good suggestions...maybe something I haven't heard or thought of. Thanks!
Re: Vegetarian
I'm in the same boat!!! my doc hated the fact that i don't eat meat and my pedi blames my sons allergies on my meatless diet.
I'm pregnant again and with a new doctor. she's much better and just told me to start taking iron supplements earlier. (it's an organic liquid supplement, if you want the name i can get it tonight when i get home - i purchased it last night and haven't tried it -i want to do my research first.) I also had diabetes during the first pregnancy so my diet was super strict
I have this book - Your Vegetarian Pregnancy : A Month-by-Month Guide to Health and Nutrition but i haven't read it yet. I will soon. it was recommended when Alicia Silverstone announced she was pregnant on her blog and i made some comments about allergies and blaming it on my vegetarian diet and she recommended this book.
Also, this is a good article from her blog -> https://www.thekindlife.com/post/my-friend-lalanya-talks-about-her-vegan-pregnancy
i just remembered the supplement that my doc told me to use..
it's called FLORIDIX ..
Iron and calcium is the only thing i worry about and it's the only thing i was low in with my first pregnant. This time around i'm eating 1 cup of broccoli a day for extra calcium and extra spinach and beans for iron.
I eat meat, but am not a huge fan of red meat, I try to stick to chicken & fish. However, I have a lot of vegetarian friends.
You eat cheese though right? I was going to say you can get protein from cheese, yogurt, hummus, nuts ( almonds, peanuts, cashews), also The Vitamin Shoppe carries brown rice protein shakes like this one https://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=brown+rice+protein&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=9731415498079273810&sa=X&ei=yx_xTcvIJovPgAe7ifXYBA&ved=0CGQQ8wIwBA
maybe you could ask your dr. about supplementing with this?
I haven't read this, but thought it looked good: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Vegetarian-Pregnancy-Month-Month/dp/0743224523
I really hope this helps!
SO- Just edited bc I didn't see the other posts before I posted this. LOL. Glad to know its a good book!
Sorry I don't have any suggestions.
When I told my doctor that I was a vegetarian he said that I was probably healthier than most of his other patients. As long as you are careful to get calcium (not too much... I got kidney stones), protein (quinoa, combine rice and beans... Mexican & Indian are good choices) and take your prenatal vitamins you should be fine. I ended up switching doctors midway through my pregnancy and she had no issues with my being vegetarian either.
