Food Allergy

Continue to offer new foods?

As mentioned in my previous post, DD had a reaction to dairy and our appt with the allergist isn't until mid-July.  I am wondering what to do now about offering new (and potentially allergic) foods prior to our appt.  So far she has had (with no reaction) sweet potato, avocado, peas, rice cereal, oatmeal, multi grain cereal, tofu, green beans, kiwi, mango, banana, pear, apple, prunes, butternut squash, corn and turkey.  (all mostly homemade)

I'm assuming egg and nuts should be on my avoid list for now.  Anything else I should be aware of?  Thoughts?

Re: Continue to offer new foods?

  • You may get differing opinions, but our allergist has us continue to offer new foods, but wait 5-7 days before introducing another new food.  For those 5-7 days, I give the new food every day and pay close attention to any potential reaction.  If no reaction, that food gets added to their list of okay foods.  If there is a mild reaction like a very mild rash, I stop and then try that food a few weeks later to see if it was coincidental or related.  If you have any severe reaction, stop and don't offer again until the appointment.  I plan to give eggs next week to our twins (they are milk allergic) and I will give peanut butter next month

  • Since she reacted to Dairy, definitely avoid those until she's tested.

like you said, i would totally avoid eggs and nuts, just on the safe side... especially since she's so young, most ppl don't even give their LO eggs/nuts until they are one, so she's not missing much.

I would continue introducing everything else and going with the rules -introduce the same food for several days before introducing another.  Most reactions happen on the second exposure so it's important to introduce the same food several times.

    good luck with the appointment!
