Mold/mildew in the humidifier?

The thing is brand new! We just got it like a week ago. We've used it every night. I smelled something in it today that smelled moldy/mildewy. My nose is stopped up too, so I don't know if this has been this way. I looked into the humidifier and saw mold/mildew spots! I'm ticked!

It says that it doesn't need a filter. I can't even get to the spots to clean them. I'd have to spray it with something then spray it out.

I'm thinking this probably has something to do with how bad LO is congested. I cut it off for tonight.

I'm so frustrated!!! DH is out of town. DD sounds awful. Her nose is so congested and nothing I'm doing is working! Our shower doesn't seem to get hot enough to steam up a bathroom.

Re: Mold/mildew in the humidifier?

  • I had a similar experience and ended up chucking the humidifier in the trash because I couldn't clean it properly without disassembling the whole thing. I was really disappointed but read on the internet that mold and mildew in the humidifier is unavoidable. I am planning to wait until winter to purchase one that can be easily taken apart and disinfected with vinegar/water on a regular basis.

    Good luck!

  • What kind is it? I had a vicks cool mist humidifier for DD 1 and it was a PITA to clean all the nooks and crannies. I chucked it because of the mildew.

I got a Crane (looks like a giant water drop) and it works SO awesome. Not noisy at all and SO easy to clean out when needed. I only have to fill it every 2-3 days when using it and I clean it out once a week or so when using it constantly. It was reasonably priced on Amazon too.

I HATE cleaning our hunidifier.  Taking it apart, soaking certain parts in vinegar, certain parts in bleach, certain parts in the dishwasher... BLAH!  Unfortunately, we have to have one because we heat with electric and wood, which are the two driest forms of heat and it sucks.

How old is your DD?  There is a baby strength Vicks Vapor Rub you could try.  I don't think it is recommended for babies under 2months old, but maybe ask your pedi to see what they would suggest.

  • This was our frustration with humidifiers.  You could put it in the tub with water and bleach, but if there is mold definitely stop using it.

We ended up getting a whole house humidifier.
