How do you keep LO's room cool in the summer heat?

If you do not have central air in your house how do you keep LO's room cool during the summer?

I have an air conditioner in LO's room where you can select the temperature say 70 degrees rather than just selecting HI-MED-LO and the ac will turn off when it reaches the degree that we choose. I also have a GroEgg from One Step Ahead that tells me the temperature of her room. I always worry that she is going to get too cold! Am I crazy? It is in the 90's hot and humid here..

  • We have one window unit upstairs in our house, it's in our bedroom. In their rooms I leave a fan blowing (though not directly on them) and then open their doors when I go to bed (I keep them closed until we go to bed so that I can do housework w/o waking them).

I have some friends that do it this way but it is not an option for us. We live in a ranch style house and our bedrooms are not close enough..

Your LO's are adorable by the way!!

  • We have central air but their room is sweltering!  We put in a ceiling fan and I put a stand up fan in there.  It seems to help.  Normally in the middle of the night I turn off the stand up fan because it gets cooler in there.

I was thinking about doing something like this with the air conditioner. Say turning it off when we went to bed then just leaving a fan on to circulate air around her room... Doing this though I would be concerned her room would heat up again..

  • We have a window unit like yours and then I just dress him in normal pjs and he has a blankie in there with him now.
  • We have a free standing unit in his room to keep it cool. I hate using it and worry he is getting to cold sometimes but we keep it at 72-74 and he seems fine. He sleeps in a short sleve shirt, shorts or pants and socks. He refuses to sleep without the socks. We also have a 2nd fan if I feel the need to use it.

That is just too cute that he refuses to sleep without his socks!  I think I will probably keep the temp around 74 too and dress her similar, less the socks Stick out tongue

Thanks for all the input ladies!!

  • Well we have central air and still have a window unit in her room.  Same as yours-- you set the temp.  Not sure if it is because technically our house is older (though was completely re-done and has a commercial ac  outside) or if it is because we probably really needed two units and zones, but either way it is too warm in there.

She just started using her blanket as a blanket a couple of months ago, so I don't really worry about her being cold anymore.  Sometimes she wraps herself up like a burrito (and she always has her head covered like a college kid).

  • Ava always covers up her head, too. lol.  We keep the room dark and closed up all day, and she has a ceiling fan on medium. She sleeps better when she's more cool than warm. (we do have central air, but it's iffy upstairs)

I also put a small fan by the vent when it's really hot. She wears thin long sleeve and pant jammies, with a light down comforter, if she keeps it on.
