Baby Names

Honoring loved ones in a name

So, to start,  MH and I were planning on having a large family, so we had fun picking names out that we would use on our future children. However, after having so many complications with this pregnancy, we are joining the One and Done group.

So now the names we had picked out to honor family members that are/were special to us is turning into a problem.

I am in love with the name Donald James in honor of my late grandfather and my Dad.

I love the name Zachary Carroll in honor of MH Grandfather on his moms side

We have also been informed that it's 'tradition' on his Dad's side to name the first born son of the family, with a name begining with an 'R'. We're not as concerned about meeting this 'requirment' because his dad has never really been in his life much and we really don't care, and we can't find any names beginning with 'R' that we like. (Roger, Ryan, Russel, Ronald have all already been used and I am not naming my son Reggie and MH refused Rocky ;-)  )

So, WWYD? I really want to honor my Family and my family is very very small so it's not as though someone else in my family will and MH grandfather already has several grandkids named after him, but MH is very very close to his Grandfather....

Re: Honoring loved ones in a name

  • I think you and your husband should come up with a name that you both love. And maybe that means not honoring anyone. Or maybe you could give him two middle names if you have to honor all three men. Zachary Donald James maybe? I wouldn't worry about the R name requirement, but that's just me. :).

  • First, I love your choices Donald James, and Zachary Carroll. Second, I know you might feel you want to be one and done, but you may change your mind later down the road. If not, I don't blame you for trying to find that perfect name to honor your family to your liking. Good for you. If you choose to pick an R name, here are some of my favorite suggestions::

    Rhys

    Raymond

    Reid

    Rolland

    Rolan

    Roman

    Ross

  • Use one name from each side.

    Donald Zachary

    Donald Carroll

    James Zachary

    James Carroll

    Zachary Donald

    Zachary James

    Carroll Donald

    Carroll James

(Although I don't think I'd use Carroll for a first name for a boy.  That's my brothers middle name, though. ;))

I think there are a lot of great combinations there.

    Agreed.

  • I think that as long as it is done in good taste & can flow well that having two middle names can be acceptable. so maybe you should sit down & find out the ones that you both really want to honor & try to get it to sound right. i agree on the "R" requirement, not important.
