Thoughts on going by a nickname....

we've picked out a name that DH likes and I can get the (nickname - name he will go by) that I want.....

do you think that is strange?

It sounds like a good compromise to me.

It is a little strange, unless the name your DH is picking is in honor of a family member or has some other deeper meaning for him that won't be overshadowed by the fact that the child won't actually be called that.

I don't really care for determining nns ahead of time, but if this is the only way you both end up happy, then go for it.

It's HARD to find a compromise with a spouse sometimes, so I say go for it!

I agree, sounds like a good compromise & if one of you calls him by his nickname & the other one doesn't then who cares. lol

I don't see anything strange about it. We rarely use DD's full name though, I have one nn for her and H has another.

When I was pg the first time, we really wanted to honor our fathers if we had a boy and name him John Patrick.  I really love the name Jack though, so we decided that's what he would always be called.  We didn't have a boy, but I say, go for it!
