Boost or Ensure?

Did anyone's Dr recommend that they drink these during your pregnancy?  My MFM wants me to get some because I haven't gained any weight yet (actually lost) due to morning sickness.  Any tips for what flavor is the best?  Did you blend them with fruit or anything to make a smoothie?

Re: Boost or Ensure?

  • I drank them both, chocolate is my favorite. But i also did (and preferred) the carnation instant breakfast drinks with whole milk....and lots of milkshakes!

  • I did Boost and Special K shakes because we got a good bulk price at Sam's Club. I just drank them as is.

  • I tried both and preferred the Ensure chocolate. After awhile they got to sweet for me, and I bought chocolat whey protein powder and mixed it with milk and a banana. The powder was much better IMO and didn't have as much sugar. I bought it at Whole Foods.

  • I prefered the Boost.  I had GD and was able to find the Glucose ones which was nice b/c they were my snacks for the day.  It was expensive at the time....but nothing compares to formula prices.

  • Yes, my MFM had me drinking 2+ of these per day in the last month of my pg (one DD was possibly IUGR and studies showed that liquid protein sources crossed the placentas more quickly/efficiently). I wish I had started drinking them sooner in my pg!

I'd have one in between breakfast and lunch and one right before bed as a "dessert." The a.m. shake I would blend it with ice, a Greek yogurt (to double the protein!!) and/or a banana--I thought that helped cut out the metallicy taste those drinks often have. The p.m. drink was blended with ice as well but mixed with a cup of soy milk or some flavored frozen yogurt (to make it like a milkshake). They actually grew on me and didn't taste so bad, IMO!

My MFM said any brands were fine--Ensure Protein, EAS High Protein, Myoplex Lite. I preferred the chocolate varieties. I bought them at most grocery chains, Target, Wal-Mart or Costco.

  • I'm actually trying to figure it out myself.  With TTTS I am supposed to be on a high protein diet.  I'm on a tight budget so cost is really important.  I tried the Boost chocolate, it tasted okay.  It only 10 grams protein per bottle which is not very much more than regular milk and costs way more.  I haven't tried Ensure but basically the same problem as Boost.  My DH bought some Jillian Michaels protein drinks that I actually liked better and have more protein and cost less.  I recently bought container of soy protein mix that I am liking.  I've been making smoothies and milkshakes with it.
  • Ensure chocolate, loved it!
