Doula?

Hi everyone, I am a new Atlanta mommy to be, expecting our first in September.

I am considering using a doula and am interested to know if any of you did and if you found it helpful? Would you recommend your doula? Do you think it would have been helpful if you ended up needing a c-section or only for natural birth?

Thanks so much in advance, looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Re: Doula?

  • I used one for the birth of my dd in April, and it was great. I had an unmedicated water birth and could not have done it without her. My husband is amazing, but doula's can provide a different kind of support, they aren't as emotionally invested so they have a clear mind - for example, despite the fact that I knew I wanted a med free birth, I was begging for an epidural during transition. Begging. And my dh may have caved and talked to the nurse about getting me one, but my doula helped me breathe and move into different positions and said encouraging things that, quite frankly, would have been annoying coming from dh but for some reason worked coming from her.

My doula usually does only post partum work, but because I knew her previously she took me on as a labor client. She works with Labor of Love, and I have heard nothing but good things about all the doulas there. They do a meet the doula tea so you can meet them and see who you click with.

If you think you want an epi early on, then I probably wouldn't spend the money on one. Ours was around $600. Honestly it was the best money we spent during my pregnancy!
