night time solution..fleece?

Everynight my LO is getting a rash.  We were using bum genius 4.0s which worked great until we figured otu she was sensitive to the lining.  Now we're using flats with 2 hemp.  We have a fleece stay dry and then put a cover on.  It works allright but around the elastic she is red every morning.  I'm thinking maybe she needs a more breathable cover.  Has anyone had success with fleece?  I know wool is recommended but I think she may be too sensitive for it.  I'd love to try fleece if it will work but I'm afraid it will leak quite easily.  Thanks!

  • It works alright. For nighttime, look for soakers or longies made out of heavyweight Polartec fleece. They'll be a little pricey. The cheap fleece stuff (< $10 or so) that's widely available is made out of much thinner fleece, which may not hold up to a heavy wetter overnight.

  • We started using fleece covers. Our system was fleece (because putting the prefold next to her skin left her red and we wanted soemthing to wick the moisture away), prefold, PUL cover, then fleece soaker.  It worked to stop the leaks, but she is now getting a bit of a rash, and definitely red around the legs like you mentioned.  I don't know if fleece alone would stop the leaks. PUL plus fleece did (PUL alone did not).

Wool is supposed to be better than fleece and more breethable so that's what we're trying next. My sister CD-ed her baby until she potty trained and said they never could get a good night solution (baby was always red) so had to use sposies at night only :-( We're going to keep trying but of course if I can't find something to keep baby from getting a rash at night we're going to use sposies. I had to put her in one last night.  I did read that vaseline keeps the moisture away from teh skin and can help - but of course youwold have to use a fleece liner or something to keep it off your CD.

I may resort to trying wool.  I am a little worried it will irritate her skin.  She has rather sensitive skin.  I'm not too tempted by disposables since those always leak with her and they give her a rash.  Darn diaper issues! :)

  • We havne't had any issues with wool but just about everything else has been a problem we can't use any pockets at night our best bed has been cotton fitteds with bamboo/hemp soakers and a wool or pull cover.

I've used Stacinator fleece covers in the (distant) past. They held DD overnight, and she was a SUPER heavy wetter. I've also heard good things about Dancing Bears, but haven't tried them myself.

If you sew, Swaddlebees has Polartec fleece in their clearance store for $7.50/yard, which is a great price for high-quality stuff like that. Limited colors, though.

Thanks!  I still really want to try wool but am having a hard time convincing DH.  I'll have to look into these fleece makers.

  • We sometimes use fleece and sometimes wool overnight, and DS used to get red, but the breathability of the cover overnight made a huge difference in rashiness. We have two dancing bears night weight fleece covers. Last time I checked, they were hard to come by new (they are about $20 new, if I recall correctly), but they work well over a fitted for us. The legs and waist aren't as stretchy as a wool cover, but if they fit properly, we had no leaks.

The downside is they really need to be washed after each use, whereas wool can be air dried and just washed every couple weeks. If you decide to try wool, Disana has some great covers that work well for overnight and are pretty inexpensive as far as wool goes (I think it was about $25). We have one and love it.
