I'm already on the registry but I had to do a swab (the inside of my cheek, I think) when I signed up - how do you do it online? Do you have to go somewhere to have it done?

When I joined about 8 years ago it was a blood draw but just now I looked at its a cheek swab. I think they will mail you a kit and you swab and send it back.

and I do believe it's $50 one time to join/do the swab. I tried to get my entire family to do this as "our gift to eachother" a few xmas's ago. (shot down, boo)

I just asked this question in LCB's post. I don't know how to do it. Also, if you are pg can you donate?
No. I looked it up when I read LCB's post.

My husband has donated bone marrow and never paid a penny. In fact, they paid him for travel expenses.
I will sign up tonight for sure.

I joined just now. They send you a kit in the mail, and that is it. You can make a donation to offset their costs, but you do not have to. Pretty easy to fill out online, and the kit comes in a week or so.

No, you can't donate if you're pregnant. You also can't donate if you've had surgery in the past 12 months (like a c-section).
I joined about a year ago, after I passed the 1 year mark post c-section with Henry.
Damn. I'm
Only 6 mos out from the c-section.

It does I was upset when I first tried to join when Henry was only about 6 months old... a dear friend of ours needed a bone marrow transplant and all of our group of friends were joining in support. But, I understand why you can't, you have to give your body enough time to really heal all the way.
Guess I can't join til next March after my 1 year mark post c-section with Ava. That stinks.

You can still join if you are pregnant or just a few months out from surgery - you just can't donate the marrow until after. It doesn't hurt to join b/c maybe you can help someone else out years from now. You never know. I know some people who joined and then got calls 10+ years later.

they send you a package to do the swab after you sign up.

nope...it rejected me...I'll have to fill out the application in a couple of months when I'm past the one year mark from my c-section. I didn't know that donation could be so easy now! thanks for sharing this info!!

In some states insurance is required to pay for the donor's registration costs (I guess it involves the marrow typing). MA is one of those states, so I didn't have to pay anything to register. It's ludicrous that anyone should have to pay to do something that can save someone's life.

Too funny! I was just about to post the same exact message!

They rejected me, too, since I had to have all those transfusions after my delivery. Boo.
But, I called my sister to see if she'd do it. She's on it! And she has a pretty rare blood type so hopefully she'll be able to helps someone someday.
I looked on the FAQs and it looks like you can still join if you're pregnant, just not donate.
