Cloth Diapering

Help me with a smell....

My diapers appear to be pretty clean and smell ok- until Henry pees. Then they just smell bad. Not ammonia- just bad. Also, I wash every other day and they smell like HORRIBLE ammonia by the time I wash.  I never had either problem before. I had been using Tide (original powder) but switched to Charlies when I found an awesome deal. I'm obviously not impressed with Charlies and will be switching back to Tide.

I was looking into the Dawn method, but wanted to hear some feedback from other CD mommas. Anybody have some advice? How did you do the Dawn (or other method)?

I should mention, I already ran them though about 4 rinses until I didn't see bubbles.

I don't think it matters, but they are all BG one size pockets.

Thanks ladies :)

  • I would strip the diapers using dawn.  Do you have hard water?  Charlie's has a chart on their site on what to do if you have hard water.  If it's just a little hard use two scoops and if it's harder use a little calgon or Borax.  It could be that you need to do one of these methods to get your diapers clean.

  • When I used Tide for a short while, I got really bad buildup since I didn't realize a little bit goes a LONG way.  I went back to RnG and I haven't had any issues before or since.  Maybe try a soak overnight with 3 tbsp of RnG in hot water?  That always seems to work for me and I've never had to strip.  GL!

Squirt of blue dawn, many rinses till bubbles are gone. Then switch back to Tide. It works!

  • Might be the Microfiber stink people talk about.  If they are BGs I assume you are using MF? I say this because if the smell is "bad" but not "ammonia" this is my guess.  I got this recently and haven't figured out what to do about it.

  • My BGs do get a smell sooner than anything else.  BumGemius actually recommends doing a bleach wash once a month, using up to 1/4 c bleach in the hot wash.  I've done this and it's fixed the smell.

  • Thanks ladies. I am doing the Dawn today- I am on rinse number 5 already (with 2nd rinse in each run). I saw that on the BG site about the bleach, but figured maybe I would try this first.

I think I may wind up bleaching the MF inserts too anyway.....

...and they will be out in the sun allllll day tomorrow :)
