I have HBP and have for years. I really didn't want to have to take med's but the Dr thinks I should. They have prescribed Trandate, I'm really scared that this might have some effect on the baby. Does/has anyone taken this drug? It's listed as a class C and I'm not sure what that exactly means. Any insight would be great
TIA
Re: Anyone taking trandate ( labatalol)
I've been on/off it for the last 10 days while hospitalized for PreE. I needed it to get my BP down, but then once it came down, I was below the threshold for it (top number needs to be over 120). My last dose before this morning was Friday at 11pm. I just went back on it this morning, because my BP started to creep back up (140/90).
Not sure on the drug class. but it is what they prescribe here. I'm on the lowest dose (200mg). No side effects as far as I can tell...
Good Luck to you!!
My Dr. told me it is an older drug that they use regularly in pregnancy. The effects on mother and baby are pretty well established at this point. It is a benefit outweighs the risk type of situation. Class C means there are no human studies but animal studies showed potential for negative side effects in the fetus. And I know it is scary to take anything while pregnant, but read about the effects of untreated hypertension in pregnancy. It is A LOT scarier! Ask any mom who had severe pre-e or an abruption because of their BP. They would all say take the drugs!
Without them you are risk for super imposed pre-e, stroke, placental abruption, preterm delivery and the baby could have serious growth retardation and blood flow issues. The benefits far outway the risks. GL!!
