Getting stuff out of LOs mouth?

We are moving and have stuff everywhere. Asha will not stand to confined now that she is super mobile - she is into exploring. Twice in the past two days DH runs to me in the bathroom holding her upside down because he thought she put something in her mouth or she grabbed and bit the paper he was holding. How do you check their mouth if you think they have something bad in there? I try to sweep with a finger. She also always looks like she is chewing on something... Better yet - how do you get them to stop putting stuff in their mouth?

  • There's no way to keep them from putting things in their mouth.  Its part of how they learn and discover new things.  You just have to be SUPER vigilant about keeping things out of their reach and making sure that the floor is as clean as it can be.

If you think she's got something in her mouth, just take your finger and sweep inside.  Swallowing a little piece of paper isn't going to hurt her, but you have to be super careful about her putting small things in her mouth.

  • Sounds like you might benefit from use of the pack and play or a safe zone in your moving chaos.  Putting toys in there that DD will enjoy and always have a few new ones on hand (even homemade - pot and utensil, etc.) for when she gets bored.  You can't stop them from putting things in their mouth - but you can prevent bad things.  It's not easy but it is a constant priority.

This exactly. Mine still out everything in their mouths. We gate off the living room and that is their play area. We keep it completely childproofed and nothing is small enough to hurt them. We let them in other areas but only when we watch them every second.

I was also taught in my CPR class not to swipe because you can push it back into their throat, that you're supposed to bend them over at the waist and smack their back to have them cough it out.
