D.C. Area Babies

Mom Groups

Just wanted some advice as i'm going to be new to the area. I'm moving in early July, we're having our first LO beginning of August and i'm keen on meeting people once i move down to Gaithersburg. I'm worried that since i'm losing my support network all at once when our daughter comes and that my job used to keep me busy 60+ hours a week (and will now be over), that i'm not going to handle things emotionally as well as i could normally. I have two questions:

1. Any advice for good mommy groups? Online, i found a group called Baby Talk and another called Super Fun Moms.

2. Did any of you guys start joining groups BEFORE you had your child (ie. last month of pregnancy)? Why or why not?

 TIA!

Re: Mom Groups

  • Try meetup.com.  There are a ton of mom groups in NOVA.  I'm sure you'll be able to find something on there.  I'd find one that has lots of activities, and go ahead and try a few out before you settle on one.

I didn't join any beforehand, but I was in Fredericksburg and there weren't as many options.  There are people that have joined my current moms group while still PG.

  • My first baby is due in early August too, and I went ahead and joined a Mom's group already. I've been able to meet up a few times on the weekends with some of the other ladies, (once for a Saturday morning walk and another for a book club). It's nice to get to know people who are in the same stage, even if I am not quite there yet! I am hoping to be more active once this little girl arrives.

  • Check with the hospital where you are going to deliver. Sometimes they have groups too.  I met some really good friends through the INOVA new moms group!

  • I joined Baby Talk I via meetup.com and have met some awesome people.  Would definitely recommend.  Good luck!

  • I am due in late Sept, early Oct and live in Rockville. I would be interested in joining a moms group as well. I will be going back to work not long after the baby is born, but would still like to have some kind of network int he area.
  • Meetup opened my eyes to the possibilities. I founds a great group that I love and I found one that wasn't a great fit, but was worth trying out. In addition to that, my local LeLeche League chapter is very supportive and welcoming. I tried that out while PG and then didn't go back until LO was over a month for various reasons. I wish I had gone in that interim period!
