Anyone switch from a name brand formula to a generic?

If you switched from a name brand to a generic formula did you have any issues switching?    We are on Enfamil Gentlease and she does great on it but the checks and coupons have stopped or are few and far between and it's getting expensive, especially now that she is up to 5oz per feeding.  Can only imagine when she is up to 7 or 8 oz.    Sam's club has a generic version of the Enfamil Gentlease Lipil that costs like $21.00 (or close) for 46 or so ounces.

Also, what does the Lipil mean?  The Enfamil Gentlease doesn't say Lipil but the generic does and I don't know exactly what the Lipil part stands for.

  • We switched with DD 1 and had no issues. We did a gradual switch just in case, but now we use all the generics interchangeably for the soy formula. (She's allergic to milk so we're still on formula)

  • We switched from Similac sensitive to the Target generic form (Up and Up). Within 24 hours, we were at the dr. office because DD couldn't poop.  She had a poop that was hard as a rock that was completely blocking off her rectum and she couldn't push it out.  We had to give her a glycerin suppository, and the dr. helped "clean her out".  I'm sure it was because of the formula (not sure why it caused that, but it's not like she's eating other things that could have blocked her up.).

So, if you try out generic, don't be like me and just assume it will be fine and buy a case of 6 containers Embarrassed i would just buy 1 and make sure it's ok for your LO.

When i googled Lipil, this is what i got:

"According to Enfamil, LIPIL is a mixture of two ingredients, ARA and DHA. These two nutrients, which appear in breast milk but not in many manufactured infant formulas, are specific types of fatty acids, Omega 3 and Omega 6."

  • We switched from Enfamil Newborn to the Up & Up most similar to Enfamil Gentlease.  We did a gradual switch over a week although my doctor said this wasn't really necessary.  LO's poops were definitely more solid for awhile but this might have been because the oz lines on our bottles were incorrect and LO was getting more formula per water...

Like pp said, maybe buy one container and try it out before investing in several.

  • We did and it was AWFUL! We were on similac sensitive and switched to target's generic like PP. The next day he was screaming and had tears running down his little face because he couldn't poop. He managed to poop and it was rock hard and bloody. I thought it was a fluke but it went on for days (luckily just once a day). We realized it was when we switched to the generic and switched back to similac one night and the very next day his poop was normal. Never again! I went back to target's site to read the reviews (and add mine) and there were a lot that complained about contipation.

  • I plan on switching after we finish what we have now. Formula is fda regulated, so it has to be good for baby.  And poo issues are to be expected at first.  Most adults gets poo issues when you switch food.
  • We switched from Enfamil Gentlease to the Sam's Club brand. I was obviously interested in trying it out just for the price. It has worked for us just fine. LO didn't even notice a difference. I know a lot of people make a gradual change, but we went from a container of Enfamil straight to the Member's Mark brand just fine.

  • You can request a sample of the Sam's formula to make sure it will work. :)

eta: I can't make it clicky, sorry!

  • We were on Similac sensitive and switched to up&up (target) where she too had hard poops.  Dr said to feed her prune juice and water mixture, which helped.  But decided to switch back.

  • We used the sam's club regular formula with DS and we are using it now with DD. I have been given several different sample containers of name brand formulas from various friends and we have used them in conjunction with the generic with no problems.

  • Much as many of the PP said, we had issues with poop and other formulas.  I dont think its just generic... if you need a sensitive formula then you need a sensitive formula.

W sleeps better, poops better and is a happier baby on Enfamil gentlease, and this is worth any amount of money to me.

  • We switched from Enfamail Prosobee LIPIL to Target brand soy formula with no issues whatsoever.
