minimum breastmilk intake for 8 1/2 month old?

i know at the 6 month check-up we were told 24-32 ounces a day. today i think he probably fell short of that, but didn't seem that interested in the bottle or the breast at the end of the evening. i kind of remember someone on this board saying 18 oz is the minimum for a 9-month-old, but dr. google is mostly saying that it should be more. thoughts?

  • Hey!  Don't stress about it.  When you feed only at the breast, it is really hard to know how much your baby is getting (which is what I was able to do).  I remember for sure that there were days when my babies fed less often, particularly when they went through the phase where they are very distracted and becoming more active.

If a couple of days go by and he seems to be eating less overall, it could be that he is coming down with something.  But one day here or there...I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I hope you have an okay night tonight with the sleep!!

  • I was told there's a wide range, but the average is 20-28oz for a nine-month-old.  I think a lot of it depends on how much solid food he eats.  DD was chowing on everything in sight at that age, so I dropped a bottle at child care and was sending 10oz/day and then nursing her 2-3 times at home.

  • ditto superned...how much solid food does he eat?  DS ate a lot of solid food at that point and not all that much milk...he had 8 ounces at daycare and nursed twice at home (and I was struggling with my supply, so he miiight have been getting another 8-10 oz...and he still gained weight appropriately.  Its so tough...i am currently stressing about it again since I've all but weaned...  big hugs!  I think if he is having lots of wet diapers and seems content, I'd let him lead the way on how much milk he needs at this point :)
  • My pedi was the one that said 18oz was the minimum at 9 months....and honestly, DD didnt even get that all the time. In the end, my pedi always said every kid is different and will thrive on different amounts. Don't force feed, follow their cues, and so long as they are gaining weight and happy, all is well. Obsessing about how much DD was eating was the hardest part of going from breast to bottle for me! At the breast, we are assuming they are getting enough, but for some reason it is impossible not to focus on the numbers with bottles. Good luck!
