1st Trimester

A TMI question (Sorry)

I'm 10 weeks and a few days pregnant.  I've already had an increase in the need to urinate - which I know is normal.  Early this a.m. worried me though, and I wanted to know if it was normal.  I woke at 5 (an hour later than the need to use the bathroom has been waking me the last few weeks).  My bladder was full, but my body just would not release it - I tried to push and even then it was difficult.  It must have taken me a full five minutes.  I've never had difficulty before, I do not have a UTI or anything like that.  Is this normal as the pregnancy continues? Or is this something I should take more seriously?

  • Are you sure you don't have a UTI or bladder infection? How do you know you don't have a UTI...that's what it sounds like.

  • With DD I never had any problems urinating... other than needing to go every 5 min towards the end. And I do not know anyone it has happened to either. That being said, I don't know if it is cause to worry or not. However it might not hurt to call the dr tomorrow morning and just ask.... especially if it happens again.

  • I never have an issue releasing urine.  In fact, I can hardly make it to the bathroom most times.  Now sometimes I dont think I completely empty my bladder (or maybe I get kicked) because 5 minutes later I have to pee again. I would call the doctor because it could be a sign of something more now or in the future.... "holding" your urine isn't good for you and can cause UTI's and bladder infections.

  • Sounds like a uti or bladder infection to me.  I just got over one and that was my only symptom.

  • I had the same thing with my first pregnancy.

  • I kind of had something like that and it was definitely a UTI, just starting out. I didn't even have a fever or anything like that and the only reason they found it was because I had gone into the ER complaining of dizzy spells (turns out I was severely dehydrated)

Another thing, if you don't think you're emptying your bladder enough if you lean forward a little it can usually empty it all out. Some women have trouble with that because the uterus presses against the bladder making it hard for it to empty completely.

I'd call your doc in the morning and see if its anything you should address. The last thing you want is a bad infection while you're pregnant.

  • I would get it checked out.  You can't be sure that you don't have a UTI.  I never get symptoms of having a UTI, and if I'm not careful, it progresses to a kidney infection.

If it's not a UTI, there's definitely some type of inflamation somewhere.  Baby's not nearly big or heavy enough to cause any type of significant pressure on your bladder.

Good luck, hope all is well!

  • I just read about this in WTEWYE. They mentioned if it's not a UTI it could have to do with the position of your uterus putting pressure on your urethra.

I'm going from my OB appt on Friday when they, as part of the normal routine, didn't find anything.

I had my first UTI last month without having any symptoms - and didn't find out until the OB screening.

I'll give a call just to make sure tomorrow.

Sounds like a UTI to me.  I was in the ER for some spotting and they did a UA and found that I had a UTI.  I have never had one before and I didn't think I had any symptoms.  Turns out, a UTI can cause the spotting and it could also be the cause of the abdominal cramping I was experiencing.  I have been on medicine for a few days now and already feel better.  Apparently UTIs are very common in pregnancy because of the way the uterus sits on the bladder.  I would call your doctor and have them check you out...it can't hurt, that is what they are there for!  Good luck!!!
  • I'm in my 9th week and am experiencing the same thing first thing in the morning (only), but an hour later I'm totally fine. I've never had a UTI and now I'm worrying :(

I'm so happy there are others out there posting issues bc all of the responses have helped get me through the changes I'm experiencing.

What did you find out when you called the dr. the other week? I didnt see another post about this from you.
