Baby Names

if your last name ends w/ Y

are you staying away from first names that ends w/ Y?  so far every girls name i've come across that i like that starts w/ a Y sounds way too cutesy when said w/ our last name.   too bad there are a lot of them out there!

our last name starts w/ an M and so many cute girl names start w/ M and i've started talking myself out of those also, the alliteration thing is starting to sound weird to me too.  i'm probably just over thinking this huh? :)

it's so funny that when we were expecting a boy i thought girls names were sooo much easier, now that that's what we're looking at it seems so hard!

Re: if your last name ends w/ Y

  • Our LN sounds like Julie.  So, any names ending in -ey/-ie/-ee were all out.  Not that they all sounded terrible, it was just a personal preference for DH and me.

For names that you think sound alliterative or rhyming, just practice yelling at them (not that you would).  But, for me, "Julie LN GET IN HERE AND PICK UP THESE TOYS!!" killed Julie as a potential name.

Anne Marie, however, was our girl name choice and Marie also sounds "sing-songy" with our last name.  But, we felt Anne Marie sounded feminine and pretty rather than too cutesy.

  • Our last name ends with "me" so I automatically disgarded any name that ended with that sound. DH wanted Tobias for a boy for his grandmother, but I think Toby N---me sounds ridiculous!

I don't see anything wrong with a name that starts with a Y though.  I can't think of that many though, the only one that is popping into my head is Yolanda.

yeah, i'm a moron.  i meant to type ends w/ Y (just fixed it).  like i think Molly is wicked cute, but Molly McCarthy sounds to cutesy.

Haha, that makes so much more sense!

I'm with you, I really hate names that sound too cutesy, it's better for a doll than a baby.  What about names that end in "a", clearly I'm partial to that.  Mara McCarthy or Mila McCarthy could be really good.

  • Our last name is 2 syllables and ends with a "sey".  I've found that I pretty much across the board don't like names that are also 2 syllables and end with 'y', but 3 syllable names don't bother me as much, because it breaks up the sing-songy effect.

I have the same dilemma.  We didn't need a girls name, but it is way harder for us to find one we love especially because I want to stay away from names that start with M and/or end with Y/ie.  Molly, Maggie,  Mary, etc.

  • My maiden name ended with a y, and none of my cousins had first names that ended with a y.  Luckily!
  • I probably would do the same thing.  My last name ends with a t, and I would not name a child something that ended with a t. It is hard to pronounce and seems strange.

I have a kid in class named Colt Bunt, and you have to enunciate it so much.  I can't stand it.  (I changed a letter of his last name and the spelling of his first name)

  • DH really likes the name Lily and our last name ends in ey.  I wasn't sure about it but I don't think I will take it off the list because it is more of a musical sound than an awkward one.  I am considering that it may be too much but I think it is a nice name so I am not going to take it off the list yet.

  • I would also try to avoid the FN/LN same sound.  My married name put me into this category, and it still sounds weird and too-cutesy.  Both FN and LN end with the long E sound.

Thats how I feel too. Molly McCarthy does not sound too sing-songy to me because of the three syllables in the last name.

Our last name is two syllables and ends in "ke"(pronounced key), I really liked the name Brady when we we choosing names for my son but didn't like the way it sounded with our last name.

Oh and my name is Maggie and I don't like it at all paired with my last name.

  • I personally don't have a problem with a nickname that ends in a y/ie sound. I do hesitate a little with a full name ending in that sound, like Mary or something similar. But my last name is now Clary, and I go by Katie Clary and it doesn't sound odd to me. Mary Clary would be a little bit much, since it's a perfect rhyme.

I think it depends on your last name. Dorothy Clary wouldn't sound awful, but Dorothy McCarthy would be a little rhymey. But Mary McCarthy wouldn't sound as bad as Mary Clary. See what I'm getting at?

  • Our last name ends with ie and we are staying away from all names with a y or ie sound.  DH and I both agree that it sounds too cutesy.  And you're right that there are a lot of girls names that end like that so it is challenging.

Our last name starts with a B so B names are out also.  We had a hard time deciding on names with DD and are having a hard time now as well.

I actually think Molly McCarthy sounds fine!  Maybe because of the different number of syllables.  Anyway, MH's last name is 2 syllables, ending in that "ee" sound, so I don't think a first name like this would work.  Maybe if it had at least three syllables.  I think it really depends on the specific names in question, some sound better than others.  TBH I haven't run across many names ending in y, or that sound, that I would have considered anyway.
