Sand for a sandbox?

I know we can get it at Home Depot, Menards, etc. But is some better than others?  I've read about some type having an odor or clumping weird.  Suggestions on what/where to buy so this doesn't happen?

Re: Sand for a sandbox?

  • I just went to Lowes and bought Play Sand (it was in 50 lb bags).  Its great, no complaints about it.

  • Yes, get the more expensive kind made for sand boxes.  The cheaper stuff is really dirty and you kids will be extra filthy after playing in it.

And  I think there's something about fine particles in the cheap sand - kids breathe it in and that's not so good.

  • You can sometimes get play sand from sand and gravel places too (that contractors use). If you know someone with a truck to haul it for you, its WAY cheaper than buying it at the store. That's what we did, but DH has a truck and we used the place we get sand from for work.
