Mobiles...DIY or Store?

I've been looking at mobiles and am surprised at how expensive they are. Have any of you made your own? Do you think it's best to just buy one or DIY? What mobiles are you considering?

Re: Mobiles...DIY or Store?

  • I'm making my own of plush owls and birds, and using a large embroidery hoop as the base. I will hang it in a corner so that I don't have to take it down so quickly. My DS stood very quickly, and his store bought mobile was a waste.

  • we have both.  lol.  the store one that plays music is in the crib.  love that one.

then i made one to put over the changing table.  i'd probably never put that one over the crib because there are small parts and i'd be afraid he would one day stand up and reach for it, pull it, and then it would fall apart.  but, i guess that depends on what kind you make too

  • The mobile we have came with the bedding set.  It was a 6pc (or so) set.  I would buy one from the store, just cause I don't want to make it myself.  Wont look as nice.  If you shop around, you can find some good deals.  Try ebay, Walmart, Target, etc.

  • We got the tiny love one for DD and I never had an issue with it at all, loved the bright colors, the music, etc.  We'll be using with this little one also.
  • I am getting mine from the store.   I would love to make one, but I have so many other projects I am working on that I don't think I will be able to find the time.

If you make one, it could end up being cheaper or more expensive depending on how much time and materials are put into it.   I know if I would make one, it would probably be more expensive than the one I registered for.  I tend to go overboard on my craft/sewing projects though.

  • This is what I made for my nursery.  I took (hijacked) paint sample cards from Home Depot and used a scrapbooking punch to punch the circles.  Then I attached with jewelry jumprings and hung it from two 12 inch dowel rods.  Nothing fancy but it brings color to her room.  I chose the colors based on the fabric that I am using throughout the nursery.

    That is so cute!
  • I was shocked at the prices but didn't want to totally DIY (or rather DIM?) so I bought one at Once Upon a Child in perfect condition for $10, which at least starts to be more reasonable.  We're going to use the base from that and change out the little dangles to something more personal.
