does anyone here own a slip for under skirts/dresses?

YES I am apparently 70 yrs old. haha! I bought a dress that I think is pretty cute/hip/whatev this week (it's from romeo & juliet couture, I swear it is not a big huge frump dress!)  but it is short & a really light fabric & you can see my legs & undies through it and it seems like it could be a bit static clingy too...so I wanted to get a short skirt slip to go under but apparently this is a thing of the past. (disclaimer, haven't hit a dept store yet). I went to victoria's secret which doesn't have anything that is actually meant to be worn UNDER clothes, LOL and then I went to one of those underwear type stores that has tons of stuff and oh man were those slips hideous & long and bulky! I need something short & relatively form fitting so that it isn't all bunched up under the dress..

I actually have a really old one of my mom's that I cut at the bottom to make it short but would love to get a 'real' one that fits better & suits the purpose of decreasing see-through-ness.

Anyone besides me have/want this????

Re: does anyone here own a slip for under skirts/dresses?

  • Yes, I used to wear slips to work all the time so my skirts and dresses wouldn't cling to my tights!  I don't know why nobody wears slips anymore.  They are so practical and I am not at all a frumpy type.  In fact, I think there is little frumpier than wearing a skirt that sticks to one's tights!  I think you could get them at any department store and I think I've even seen them at Target.  I have 4 slips, one that is mid-calf length and white, two just above the knee length -- one white and one nude, and a mini length black one.  If you don't find them in-store, just shop online because they sell them in a variety of lengths.  All that being said, with the sort of dress you are describing, you are probably best off with a nude dress slip (they sell clingy ones in department stores), a nude slip with a matching nude cami, or just getting some nude undies with seams.

  • I'm pretty sure places like Dillard's and JC Penney still carry slips.  I have a couple, but I haven't actually bought one in several years.  I can't stand how freaking thin so many dresses are made today.  You pretty much HAVE to wear a slip under about a lot of what's out there if you don't want the world to see the outline of your crotch every time you stand near a window with the sun shining through.

And how short are you talking?  Because the shortest I have is probably about 6-7 inches above my knees, and I don't think I've seen any that are shorter than that.

  • I don't wear slips (I barely wear dresses), but how about one of those spanx sort of things?

  • I love slips....seriously there something so vintage and Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof about them.

I even was known to wear them to bed because they have that sexy lingerie look to them.

I'm bringing slips back, that is my mission.

    The end.

awesome! I love them as nighties too (although i don't own any, I like the concept & they're comfy)

Well I am only 5' tall so that is why short is important- the dress is like an inch or two above my knee so I need the slip an inch or two shorter than that & I'm so short...

But thanks for the suggestions! And ditto pp, more than seeing my undies I hate that if the light shines right you're seeing the full outline of my thighs up to the crotch. wth is wrong w/ these dress makers? :) cheap cheap cheap IMO, all these dresses need is a little thicker fabric or a really thin lining.

  • I had to find a slip last year because I cut the waistband on my only black one when I was pregnant.  I had no idea how hard it would be.  I asked at several department stores and they all said they don't carry them anymore.  I tried Target, Wal-Mart, etc. and then I finally found one at Kohls.  I don't understand why no one wears them, I would much rather wear a slip than have everyone see through my clothes.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • I had NO idea that slips were old school.  I have/wear them.  Does that mean I'm old?  :-(

    THIS.

All of my work clothes are high quality (from stores like Talbot's) and are lined, but pretty much every moderately priced or inexpensive casual dress I own is see through in the light.  I can't believe that people wear these thin dresses without a slip, but people must be because slips are hard to find!

I own one nude half slip that I bought when my two previous slips disappeared, and I remember being shocked having to run around to nearly five different stores to find one.  I think I finally found it at Dillards.  Next time I need one I'm just ordering online because it was such a pain to find.

  • Speaking of grandma underwear...I have 2, and they're actually the shorts type, like you could wear under slacks? When it's hot, I hate to have my legs touch at all! I got mine from JCP.

I bought a cute white sundress that definitely needs a slip. I ended up cutting one of my knee length ones so I could wear the sundress.

  • I have a few...I haven't worn them really in years since I was teen and going to church but I keep a few different lengths for just in case.

One slip I had my aunt re-hem for a much shorter length
