DD likes the classic golden books, Disney fairy tales, and other generic stories. They're super cheap on Amazon so we loaded up. She also likes the Pinkalicious series.
There are several books DS liked at that age and that he still enjoys. One of his favorite books is The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood. Little Miss Spider Sunny Patch Kids is a cute one too.
She likes most of the books mentioned, but definitely Pinkalicious too! Also some of the Dr. Suess ones (Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, etc.). And the Little Golden story books that have multiple stories in them...
Mine, 3 and 4, love the "Charlie and Lola" books. I got a bunch of them from Barnes and Noble online and in their stores. They also really like fairytales too. DH lets them pick one story/book each, and he reads it to them at night.
Next year, I'm going to start with the old "Ramona", "Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing", and "SuperFudge" books with my then 5 year old. : )
If she has a good attention span, why not try out some short chapter books? DS really enjoyed The Mouse and the Motorcycle. He also likes the Junie B. Jones books, but I really don't like them b/c of the poor grammar of the main character. It's kind of weird when your 3 year old speaks better than a character in a book.
Both DS's love the Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That books. They all have the same cadence and rhyming as other Dr. Seuss books but they teach things too. DS1 LOVES the one that is called "Clam I Am," which is all about the beach.
I just got my son The Wheels on the Bus book and he loves it. My son is speech delayed and has attention problems but this book gets him talking and keeps his attention for a long time. I'm really impress by this book too...beautiful artwork and really creative interactive pull tabs and lift flaps. I highly recommend it. Here's the book:
