High-Risk Pregnancy

Okay so now that I've gotten over the high risk label of being pregnant, I am just trying to be healthy for my baby and myself.  The point of my rant is this: has anyone been to a nutritionist yet? If so, could you please share a tip or two they told you in controlling your sugar levels? I am schedualed for my 3hrs test on Wednesday and still don't know what I can and cannot eat.  I mean I don't eat anything made with extra sugar ie: cookies, cakes, candy bars, soda, ice cream ect.  My only weakness is homemade pasta and bread.  Since finding out I am a GD I've given those foods up.  Is that enough to keep my sugar in check? When I read the labels on food items they all have carbs most of which are higher than there protein content.  I don't want to only eat mostly protein cause they tend to be high in cholesterol which is a problem for me as well.  I welcome any advice you guys are offering thanks.

  • A nutritionist will be better able to help you with your concerns, esp the cholestorol, but don't freak out yet... You haven't even taken your 3 hr test yet! You may pass that just fine and not have to worry about it.

    You can still eat carbs on the GD diet, just in limited quantities. You can't give up carbs entirely, because it will cause your body to A) not get what it needs and B) start making it's own sugars to compensate. Try to eat a moderate amout of carbs (about 45g per meal is my allotment, except breakfast where I can only have up to 30) and make sure to have snacks. Having protein (meat, eggs, greek yogurt, cheese, etc.) with your carbs will help your sugar levels be more stable.

    Sometimes it doesn't matter how careful you are, or what you eat, your body is just more resistant to insulin, and you can't control it. Others find they do just fine with only having to modify their diet. It just depends on the person. Good luck with your 3 hr test!

  • Just to clarify, you haven't taken the 3 hour yet? Failing the 1 hour does not always mean you have GD. They won't be sending you to see any dietitians or specialists until they've officially diagnosed you. You may still pass the 3 hour and not have any issues.

    If you are concerned in the meantime, limit your carbs. Like pixiegirl said, don't give them up completely - that can be as bad as eating too many. Just eat them in moderation, balance with protein, and choose whole wheat/whole grain breads and pastas. Fruit will spike your numbers so eat it in small portions and stay away from juice.

  • thanks guys. No I haven't had the 3hrs yet.  I wish I could have only one slice of bread.  That's my biggest problem, so I think I will stick to veggies for carbs, and maybe have one or five french fries from my BD.  I wish I could have dairy but I'm lactose intolerant.  Will let you know how the test goes.

  • Switch to whole wheat pasta and bread and limit it.  There's really nothing you can do to prevent it before taking your 3hr.
