I am so happy to see this board! I have three boys - two of them have food allergies. DS#2 is allergic to tree nuts and kiwi. His younger brother is allergic to milk, eggs, peanut, tree nut and sesame.
DS#2 is in a nut free preschool which has gone great so far. I am nervous about him starting kinder in another year so I have just started researching allergy policies at our local schools. So much to sort through!
Anyway, I look forward to chatting with you all!

Re: Introduction
I love having this board too!
DD is going to a nut free preachool in the fall. I am feeling good about that, but don't even want to think about kinder yet!

hi and welcome. I have one with allergies (milk, soy, eggs, peanuts and outgrew sesame) and am pregnant with another (hopefully no allergies). It's so hard with one that has food allergies, i can't imagine 2 with allergies.
The one that doesn't have the food allergies, is he the oldest? how is he taking it?
Thanks for the welcome! My son without food allergies is the oldest - but only by a minute!
He has seasonal allergies while his twin has a tree nut/kiwi allergy.
DS#1 is actually very responsible. When we eat out he leans over to whisper, "Mama, tell them about the allergies." And he hands me packages of food and says, "read the 'gredients mama." He's such a good big brother.
Having two with allergies is challenging. But to be honest, I find myself concentrating more on DS#3's allergies b/c his list is longer and harder to avoid. Sometimes I feel guilty about not being vigilant enough for DS#2. LIke when I gave him a treat from an international market and didn't even think to check the label. He had a small reaction (clearing his throat, coughing). Benadryl took care of it but I was beating myself up because I have NEVER given DS#3 anything without reading the label. I learned a good lesson on that one.

that is so sweet of your son! i always wonder how people deal with kids that have one with food allergies and one without. Especially if the oldest does not b/c he has to re-adjust.
I really haven't made the older boys adjust too much to be honest. They were never really in to peanut butter anyway so that wasn't a big deal to cut out. I still allow them to drink cow's milk, cheese, yogurt, chocolate, etc. They know that they have to eat at the table, they are NOT allowed to share with DS#3 unless they ask me first and they have to wash their hands after (as they would after any snack).
By the time DS#3 was 18 months he would hold his hand out in a "stop" motion and ask, "make baby sick?" when he saw food. It was cute and sad at the same time.
Now he knows to ask if something is safe before he touches a food. So far the "it's not safe for you" explanaton has been enough and I offer him something else saying "this is safe for you" which always makes him smile. He hasn't thrown any fits after being told no - yet.
My pedi has a son with peanut allergies and she suggested this approach because the world isn't safe for food allergic kids so the sooner they can start managing their own allergies - in developmentally appropriate ways of course - the better. For us, so far so good.
