What can I do for exercise?

WW had been good to me, once again, and I'm losing weight (slooooowly but surely).  But man, after three kids, I am just SOFT.

I have an allergy to vibration - I break into hives when walking any distance and of course running it out.  I'm trying to think of something I could do for, I don't know, 20 minutes a day or something like that to get my heart rate up and get some of the jiggling to stop.

A full time job and three kids - and oh yes, I try to pay attention to my DH too - makes for a pretty full day... but I could do 15 - 20 minutes a day of SOMETHING.

I am not one to spend money on DVDs as we have both Netflix and FiOS On Demand.  I have not looked into exercise videos using these two services - any recs?

I love to dance - maybe I should just dance around my kitchen for 20 minutes a day?

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • If you like to dance, then maybe you should try Zumba. I just started taking some classes, and I really enjoy it. I'm not sure about your allergy to vibration though-- there's a lot of moving. I'm not sure if there are Zumba DVDs, but I would suggest classes if you have the time. GL!

  • If you can clear some space and have some light hand weights, I would definitely suggest the 30 Day Shred video. It's a work out that you really feel in 20 minutes (though you can modify it). I haven't seen if it's on Netflix, but it's only like $6 on Amazon the last time I looked. There are a lot of jumping jacks though - does that count as vibration?
  • I second hand weights and add situps and pushups.  Those are two things you can knock out when you wake up or before bed.  Do 25 or 30 or however many and work your way up.

I haven't done Zumba, but a coworker of mine is WAY into it and has lost a lot weigh (and "softness") doing it...

  • I got the Jillian Michaels DVD - the 30 Day Shred, or whatever its called. I was using it before I got pregnant this time and it's great. The workouts are challenging but short - like 15-20 min apiece and might fit your bill. Lots of toning/sculpting work.

  • Doing strength training will really help tone. You'll also need cardio, so might want to try spinning/bike riding for low impact while getting your heart rate up. Since you don't have a lot of time, if you have a bike already you can buy an indoor trainer and mount your bike and hop on when you have the time. Doing intervals is great. Also, lifting weights can also get your heart rate up if you don't stop in between
  • Another vote for Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred - cheap, quick, and to the point. And really hard the first few times!

  • I like the 30 day shred also.

If you have a Wii, I highly recommend Exerbeat. DH and I just got this a few weeks ago and we love it. You can program a 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 minute routine in there and it will pick exercises for you. There is salsa, hip hop, aerobics, karate, "boxercising", yoga/pilates, and stretching all mixed in. Super fun!
