Help me understand casein sensitivities

About a month ago DD got a really bad diaper rash. It lasted for almost a week. I realized she had eaten a lot of dairy and decided to cut out cow-dairy completely from her diet (she drinks a little bit of goat's milk almost everyday). Everything has been really clear since then. Last night I gave her some cheddar cheese and then when changing her diaper today noticed that her butt was red again.

I have several questions: Is it a good assumption to think that she has some sensitivity to cow milk protein? What should my next steps be? Is it common to be ok with goat products but not cow? Where can I find more information on this topic?

Thanks ladies!!

  • Yes it is a good assumption to think she has some problem with cow's milk -- be it a protein or a sugar of some form.   It is common to have problems with cow's milk yet still tolerate goat milk, and many other forms of milk. Next steps would be to literally journal -- not just observe stuff -- but write down what she eats and go from there to the doc and see what can be done.  If you have the pattern in writing it will help.  There may also be something that LO is eating that you don't realize could be causing problems, even 3 or 4 days after eating the problem food.

What specifically are you looking for information about?  There are some good CFGF diet sites related to autism, there are some good food allergy sites, there are some good disease specific sites -- this is why I ask.

Thanks for your response! The journaling is a good idea. I'll start that with her meals/snacks today! So, I shouldn't necessarily cut out dairy? I guess I'll put in a call to our naturopath pedi, too.

I guess the information I'm looking for is info to help me: feel confident in my assumption and know that her symptoms do point to an intolerance/sensitivity; decide how to alter her diet; inform myself about this kind of sensitivity. I'm in the learning/planning stages and need information that will help me feel armed rather than ignorant/confused.

  • I was told to stay away from goats milk due to my son's cows milk allergy.  I wish i asked why, but i didn't. Like pp said, i have heard of ppl tolerate goats milk and not cows milk also.. I would take it out of her diet for a week and see how she does. try fortified almond milk or coconut milk or  rice milk instead.

Also, get her tested asap so you're not just wondering. It's so nice to KNOW.
